I have a 2001 TXRA 150 that I bought new on a 2002 Blazerbay 2107. Had hit a semerged somthing and had to get boat repairs done. The lower unit took a good lick and also lost the engin cover.
I did run the motor about a hour after the hit and had no problems at that time. Went out to start the motor that has sat idiol for about 8 weeks and the overtemp alarm came on when the key was set to the on position. I had not even turned the engin over and it was buzzen. I did start the engine and it ran a bit rough. I did see two themostats on the head. Is there any more stats and what would be a good resistance reading with a DVM is there a way to isolate the problem to one or should I just replace both of them. Is there anything else that would cause the alarm.

Re: Yamaha TXRA150 overheat alarm

is this motor oil injected and what routine maint has been performed, do you do the annual maint as per the schedule or the wait till it breaks schedule?
we also need model number prefix's if any as they made for or five 150's in the A model range

Re: Yamaha TXRA150 overheat alarm

The maintenance is more along the lines of the wait till it breaks. No good excuses on why it is that way other than a busy schedule and no time to get anything done. It is an oil injected motor and I did check the reservoir and it was full and stayed full while the engine was running. There was a normal bit of smoke in the exhaust also.
I checked both t-stats with an ohm meter last night and both read 0 ohms.
This is the tag info of the motor. I hope it helps.
Thanks
150TXRA
6G4 X 509799
R

IGNITION CONTROL INFO
FAMILY 2YMXM2.601CA

did you test the thermostats with an ohm meter? if you did post me the EXACT procedure you used.
better yet post how you tested whatever you tested.

I think we would all like to hear more about that test. If you are going to attempt to trouble shoot or repair this yourself, then a sevice manual will be a much needed item. That way it will be a lot easier to answer your questions when we are all speaking the same language.

Re: Yamaha TXRA150 overheat alarm

To test the thermostats I unplugged both leads and placed my fluke 77 across it. I checked it both ways and (swapped black and red leads) and had a reading of 0 ohms across it both ways. I did this with the engine cold. This is the only "test" that i have done, other than just looking at the wires and connectors checking for corrosion or loose connectors.

Re: Yamaha TXRA150 overheat alarm

ok
you tested the themoswitches. the thermostats are mechaniac parts and cannot be tested with an ohm meter. the switches should have infinate resistance between the black and pink leads until about 180*F. sounds like you may have some bad thermoswitches.
a good service manual is printed by yamaha. about any dealer can get ya one. another good book is the tune up spec guide.
the thermoswitch is a simple on/off device. its off until about 180*F and on above it.
