I used the motor for 100 hours on a saltwater fishing trip and, when I changed the oil, what came out of the engine was a light, chocolate colored, thin liquid that appeared to be more in volume than the oil I put in. Obviously this is bad news. I put in new oil and ran the engine for about 10 minutes. The oil looked clear after this run with only a slight tinge of cloudiness.

I need to use the engine this weekend but the repair shop can't fix it. When I spoke to the mechanic, he also said it is hard for him to understand how water got into the oil.

What might be the cause of water in the oil? And, if I use the engine this weekend knowing I will be introducing more saltwater into the engine, am I doing serious damage even if I change the oil again the next day?

Thanks for all your expert advice. I am a real novice at this.

Here are few ways water gets into the oil. 1)Frequent short runs do not allow condensation to be "burned off". 2) Blown head gasket. 3)cracked block 4) cracked head. If the engine starts and runs normally, #2, 3, and 4 are probably not the cause although a blown head gasket can create the problem and still run pretty good. Pull the spark plugs. If two adjacent plugs are bone white and the others are the normal tan, water is getting into the combustion chamber. That puts you back to #2, 3, and 4.

Thanks for the information. I took it out yesterday and ran it about three hours and changed the oil last night---no milkiness. The oil looked darker from the use. Of the four reasons you mentioned, the first fits the best since I was using the motor for trolling at 2-3 mph. Power is at its usual level.

Appreciate the response. I'll still keep an eye on it.
