Yammy Saltwater - "broken coil"

My 2001 115 Saltwater dropped to less than 1/2 power on a trip the other day. Local mechanic (a good one) has it in his yard and he tells me the "coil" which controls the amount of charge that gets to the spark plugs is shot - only supplying enough for 2 pots. Over $A1,000 to fix. I may have misheard the name of the broken part but mechanic said he's only come across this problem with the Saltwater twice in 20 years of working on them.

Anyone else heard of this issue?

Would you expect a 10+ year old Saltwater with 600 hours to become unreliable enough to spent $A15,000 to replace the power plant?

Do you trust this guy?
Is he a Yamaha trained tech?
Should you get a second opinion? maybe

Charge coils can go bad, but do not see how that would affect just some cylinders

Might get a service manual for your motor and read up on and test things yourself

The stator generates AC power that drives the CDI and that energizes the coils. If there is enough juice to fire one, there's enough to fire all. Your mechanic is full of kangaroo dung. Find someone that actually knows what they are doing.

One of the "coils" on the stator (there are 2 from what I can see) was stuffed so there was only very limited power generated. New stator fitted and she's sweet again. My mechanic has 25 years as a Yamaha tech and he showed me what he did to test and diagnose and I watched him do the swap and test compression, etc. I don't know why you guy were so anti - maybe I did not explain the problem properly?

And considering those stators can be obtained new for under $400 that adds to my anti-ness and perhaps yours now too

My yamaha dealer increased the price for a part by 15% between the time i rang him and then walked the 1 kilometre to his shop, so i wonder what they learn at dealership school

The stator provides the AC power for the ignition system like the alternator provides the charge for the battery in your car. Saying the stator is only providing enough juice to fire two cylinders is like saying your alternator is only putting out enough charge to charge two cells of your battery.

The new stator cost $AUS870 - genuine Yamaha - I saw their invoice. The local wrecker wanted $500 and history unknown.

I am considering replacing this motor with a 4 stroke late 2014. Local qute to replace with either 115 yammy or suzie is $AUS17,000!!! Big chance ill import one myself and void any warranty. boat bits in Australia are way too expensive.

Prices do seem high in Aus, the price i got was genuine yamaha as well, i suppose its something to do with your restrictions on imports which no doubt yamaha would game too. The price of bananas in Aus always entertains me when compared to here in NZ

There are lighting coils, charge coils , and pulsar coils under the flywheel. They are for different things.
Some even have low speed and high speed charge coils that could cause voltage problems at the different RPM.
so knowing what coil showed up as bad would mean something while troubleshooting.

I am sure it was your explanation that cause the confusion
