Gentlemen,
I have just been given an older Evinrude sportwin and would like to know what year it is and what you consider the best spark plug for it. The model is 9422s and the serial number isE01970.
Thank you
Fred

I hate to disagree with Rick, but I think that motor is best suited at 24:1. Its right around the year that OMC stopped using bronze bearings.

Minority Report

1964 was the first year for the 9.5hp. I took one apart once for parts and it definitely did not have bronze bearings. I still have them and I just checked.

I do have 6 9.5hp motors running well on 50:1. When the compression is low they run better on a J6C, BTW.

Cramole ezeke, 6 of the little buggers!?!

OFFICIAL NUMBERS SECTION:
'64 was the first year for 50:1. '63 and earlier was 24:1.

MY LOUSY OPINION SECTION (Follow at risk):
I personally have no problem running '61-'63 10, 18, 28, and 40hp engines at 50:1. '64-'68 3hp engines should be run at 24:1 despite the manufacturer's recommendation. I really don't know what they were thinking on that one. '69-79 4hp engines should get at least 40:1 but I run mine at 24:1. '64-70s 5.5, 5 and 6 should get a bit more than 50:1.

That's a long story on the six motors, Paul. I fixed them up and now don't know what the h to do with them.

I have two with long shafts. I have one on a twelve foot Princecraft and one for a kicker on my 22'.
