Re: year of mercury 50 hp

Thanks for your help, got some other #'s if they'll help. On the back by the 3rd spark plug it says [vari timed reed valves then power dome combustion chamber with the #'s 1017 then 8359 right under it. On the left if your looking at the rear theres a plate cover with 12 or so bolts sealing it to the motor block with the #'s 76540. On top of one of the carburators #'s BA5DT 216 then under that 651748 On the lower carburater its different #'s BA3D 213 then under that is 651747 Only used this motor for less than 3 hours and got problems. Noticed that the fin on the very bottom is chipped, and after lookin closer the fin is slightly bent. Guess the previous owner neglected to tell me this. Stuck with it now. Seen some black oil drops that ran down the fin onto the driveway. During my second trip the motor coughed died and didnt want to restart. trolled back and tried to start again , fired up ran a little rough. When i got the boat loaded I seen milky oil around the inside of my propeller. It has been sitting in the drive since last week, and only about a half ounce of milky oil leaked out and down the fin. Not sure if its motor oil. does my motor even have oil in the block like a car? Not sure where to start, and i gotta get the correct manual so I can fix-n-fish!

Re: year of mercury 50 hp

I gave you bad info yesterday your motor is a 1983. The back drops running down the skeg sound like carbon from the exhaust and is not unusual. Your motor lubricates by mixing marine outboard oil in a 50 to 1 ratio with your gas ( 1 part oil to each 50 parts gas). The bend in the skeg should not impact your operations if it is minor however you may want to wait until others with far more knowledge than I chime in on this.

Urbek,

Welcome to iboats. Your motor was built in belgium in 1978. You should start a new thread next time rather than add a question to this one.

Re: year of mercury 50 hp

It happens.
I ran across an '83 90hp earlier this winter. It had somewhere between 5 and 20 hours on it. It was stored in a garage covered up.
I popped the cowl off and could see myself in the paint.
It fired right up with a fresh impeller, fuel and battery.
These finds are very few and far between.
Now if I can only get a neighbor off that old 25hp 4 cylinder......

Re: year of mercury 50 hp

There is a mistake on my serial number, i talked with the local dealer and it's impossible that my engine is a 1978, becouse it's a 1998 model, even better :) I don't know how that is possible, everything is legaly registered so i don't mind. Thanks for everything.

I agree, the motor in the picture is not 1978.

If your motor is a 1998, the serial number will begin with 099#####. It should begin with zero and contain a total of 8 digits. Anything prior to 1986 will only contain 7 digits.

Re: year of mercury 50 hp

The motor in the picture is mid-late 80's.
I have one that is an '87.
If I posted a picture, everyone would think they were twins...
thin red stripe, squared cowl that has a hinge in the rear and each side swings open, square plastic front name cover, controls coming in on portside...
The serial number should begin with a '6' or a letter (US). Something ain't right.

It doesn't metter enymore, everything is now clear the engine is 1988, the local dealer made it clear, something wasn't wright with the number, tommorow the engine goes to service and then full throtle:D
