Read your story, but i couldn stop looking at your dog as my shepard died a month ago.

Sorry to here about your Sheppard .. We just had to put down a black lab that was part of the family for 17 years a few weeks back also .
The big boy in my avatar " Smokey" went to dog heaven many years ago . Best dog I ever had ! I cried like a baby when he left us ..

Smokey and my dogs are having fun at rainbow bridge i bet. I cried like a whale at the lake for three days.I feel bad for the dog at the bar at the marina as i hugged her and told her our story for two nights.

It doesn't seem to matter how expensive or grand the boat is- just the experience:)

I'm 30 now but recall being 5 and riding in a neighbors boat- 16-17ft Bluefin Aluminum type bowrider I believe? (mid 80's timeframe), my parents bought a 19ft Regal in 93 (boat was a 90) and we enjoyed for a decade. Dad slowly lost interest due to the work involved, I took it over. They needed the money so when the boat went I was determined to get another one of my own!

Started with a 14ft row boat with an OB, then got a Sea Ray F16 jet boat, then a Sea Doo GTX Wave Runner, and now a 19ft bowrider. My partner is on the same page as me and loves boating and knows not to schedule much throughout the nice 6 months of the year:)
Having a boat will always be a part of our lives as the memories made with friends and family are priceless.

....oh and the smell. Every time I smell 2-stroke fumes, marinas and the faint scent of fish guts wafting through the air, life is good :)

What I love most about all of these posts are the good times shared with family. While we all love taking a solo cruise from time to time, there's nothing like taking someone else out on the water, especially a kid. Even bad trips make for good stories in the long run, and the good trips, well they clearly stay with us forever. Boats rule!

Looks like I'm a little different than most here when it comes to boats. I have no fond memories of boating as a kid. The one time I can remember being out on a boat as a kid ended up with me getting sick and my grandfather and his friends had to take me back to shore to stay with my grandmother.

Fishing on the other hand, captured my attention. Growing up with walking distance of the Potomac river, my brothers and I spent countless hours fishing. I was 16 when I went offshore fishing for the first time. The first time out I caught a fish twice as big as I had ever caught before and was hooked. That lead to my first, saltwater fishing boat at age 23 and several "upgrades" since.

While I like being out on the water, a boat is nothing more than a means to an end for me. If I'm not fishing, I couldn't care less if we wen out on the boat or not. I'm just as happy, if not happier, sitting in a lounger on a deserted beach with a margarita in hand.

Now throw a good offshore bite, breaking Stripers or blitzing Drum into the mix and all beats are off. I brave wind and cold few individuals would care to endure for a good Striper bite.

Re: Yes! im a BOAT,,,,,,And why

At age 12 my family moved from las vegas out to Bullhead city AZ, to a condo right on the river with its own little lagoon that lead out to the CO river. I was devastated because of not knowing anyone in AZ and having to leave all my friends behind in vegas. My mother and stepfather weren't very outdoors type people, but in order to make the move to our new home more appealing they promised I would love being so close to the water. They promised riding jet ski's and boats and even talked of fishing. Unfortunately the jet ski's and boating never came about, but they did buy me a trout pole and everyday after school I went down to the lagoon and tried my luck. didn't really know what I was doing, couldn't tie a good fishing knot because no one showed me how, but I learned and got "the bug". Stayed in Bulhead for about a year and a half and then returned to Vegas and never fished again until about 3 years ago (age 27) when my girlfriends (of now 16 years) brother invited me fishing. he took me to willow beach and we spent all night out there on the dock and I caught a Catfish... and "the bug" was back!!!

Then went and bought my own poles, tackle, and have been again teaching myself ever since. I bought my first boat which was a 10' pelican bass raider (pontoon style) made of plastic, and put an 8hp mercury on it  (waaay too much for that boat lol). then wanted something bigger, so I bought a 16' Four Winns Freedom 160 and fell in love with boating and learned to wakeboard. then sold the pelican bass raider and bought a 10 or 12' aluminum bass tracker horrible boat, soo narrow I almost capsized twice, so after a month and a half I sold it and bought Motor Boater (formerly "Big Money") which is a project almost completed.

Then I found iboats and fell in love with this forum and speaking to all of you, and being able to learn from you all and how to work on my own engines. Now I'm just trying to teach myself more about fishing as I go, and will be posting a thread soon looking for an experienced buddy to :fish2: with.
