I have a 1989 Bayliner capri that came with a Force 50hp a few weeks back I had overheating problems and so I purchased a new impeller and wear plate along with a new thermostat. I installed the parts today and put the motor in the tank to run it and motor still isnt picking up water or spitting it out the holes in the back I looked at the housing and did not see any cracks and the old impeller was still good itself just dont know why it isnt picking up any water. also the engine is having starting issues sometimes it fires right up shut it off then start right back up do it again and nothing it just turns over like no spark. sometimes i keep bumping the ignition switch and it will start right up again. but like before one or two times starting then it just cranks. I eliminated the key switch and just hot wired it and still the same problems.. I am not having any clues at this moment was wondering if anyone has an idea??? Thanks.

I have a few Chrysler and Force motors that refuse to prime when in a barrell. Use the muffs, and sometimes combine them with the barrell (good insurance). I had an old 70hp Chrysler last week that did this to me, I ended up putting it in the barrell, pulling the plug on the top of the head, and filling the motor from the top down with water via a tight fitting pressure washer tip in the opening. I then had an assistant turn the key to fire it up while the water was still rushing in. This primed the motor, flushed whatever was holding the flow up, and proved that the cooling passages worked. It pumps as it should now, but was a royal PITA to figure out!!

Second issue could be multiple things, fuel delivery ie.. carb adjustment, timing, spark, compression, etc.. What have you done maintenance wise to the engine?

A tiny bit of water will bead up and shut off the gas then disperse when the engine stops and the fuel flows back into the carb. Just drop the bowel and clean it. Use some sea foam in your tank. really makes things work better.

What kind of tank are you using? Muffs should be enough when used properly and with full water pressure. Starting problems could be any of the above and also check all the wires for good connections including grounds. Check under heat shrink
at the connections for shorting or broken wires. Carefully moving each wire at the power strips while motor is running may help you find any loose wires. Careful of the spinning flywheel.

Well Checked it all out and there were a number of wires that looked good but wasnt peeled off the heat shrink tube and corroded pretty bad so i decided to remove all ends and redo them all then wraped them with new shrink tub,, I tore down the lower end and checked everything out and now it seems to pump really well. so now all the problems I had before are gone but now that I have done all that the motor seems to stumble pretty bad,, UGGGGGGG

Check the wires also coming out of trigger housing. This is under the fly wheel. With motor running and being very careful, gently move wires back and forth to see if there is a short there. Again be very careful of you spinning fly wheel. Gently so as to not disturb the timing while motor is running. Now as jerry stated the reeds may be bad. One bad reed petal can cause the stumbling with your motor. Also air in the fuel line can cause this. Air fuel mix screw out of adj. Bad fuel pump diaphragm can cause this. Plugged fuel return can cause this prob. Water in fuel also. If you don't already have a force manual for your motor then get one as soon as you can. Lots of useful info.
Take it one thing at a time and see what you get. Let us know how it all turns out.
