Hi, I have an Evinrude Sea King (sold by Montgomery Ward?) with the number 883461 stamped on the freeze plug, I'm removing several coats of paint from the I.D. label and can't read it yet. Could you tell me the year? According to the cowling, it should be a 40hp. Thanks!

I can't seem to get anywhere with that number. Could it be GG-something? GG-8834A would be a 1960 Gale Built 25hp, which a 40hp cover would fit.

Evinrude and Sea King are contradictory labels. It was the Gale division of OMC that built the Sea Kings. They're very much like older Johnson and Evinrude engines and many parts swap including cowlings. What parts identify it as an Evinrude? What parts say it's a Sea King?

Thanks, I'm sure we can pin it down. Especially if you can get a model number or even a partial number off the ID plate.

Re: yet another Evi I.D. crisis

The cowling reads "40 hp" on the front and "Sea King" on the sides. After getting through all the paint, I see the model no. is GG18805A and SN is36X883461. I was told by the guy I bought it from it was an Evinrude, and the fuel lines I bought for it are Evi's. You were right on the money, the label also has at the bottom "Gale - Montgomery Ward". Thanks for your help!

It's pretty much identical then to a Evinrude or a Johnson. It doesn't have the "super quiet" midsection like '60-'70 40hp engines and I don't believe it has a thermostat either. So those parts are very much like the '62-64 28hp, the '65-71 33hp, and the early 70s 40hp (when they made it into an economy engine).
This is important as the water pump is different from the other 40hp engines.

Excellent! Thanks for your help. Any opinions of the ol' man. Is it a keeper, or should I sell? Thanks again, everybody.

They're good running engines, but I'm biased. Click my "Man-Next-To-House" icon and you'll see my '62 28hp.

Thanks! :)
But you see that midsection, and how it's different from a "normal" 40hp like this one:

Parts for these things are very cheap compared to other outboards. They were very popular engines so what isn't available aftermarket or OEM is easily found in the junk yard.

Re: yet another Evi I.D. crisis

yeah, that looks a lot closer to my 40, except someone had painted the entire thing white. If it continues to run good, maybe I'll break it down over the winter and clean and paint it. -Not to the show piece you did, by far!

Re: yet another Evi I.D. crisis

The ignition system has nothing to do with the starting/12 volt system. That's the most important thing to understand about these engines. The only place the ignition and 12v system come close is at the keyswitch, where the two magneto lines are shorted together to stop the engine. Whatever you do, don't let 12v into those magneto lines.

Here are a couple schematics:
http://www.shareaproject.com/fullImages/2627.jpg

http://www.files.bz/files/3414/28schematic.PDF

If you don't have a generator attached to the flywheel by a belt, cross out the generator, regulator (ARM/FLD/BAT thing) and all it's associated wiring and fuses (20A and 4A).

Re: yet another Evi I.D. crisis

Thanks again, Paul. I got it. I was missing a lead from the ignition switch to the pos. batt. All else were connected. I appreciate all your help today. I just got back w/a new marine batt., now I'm ready to go!
