Re: Yo Boomyal! Whats the latest with the disolving rope?

Mark, just about the time that I got my canopy set up (early Dec) so that I could continue work on my flooring, my boat motors were stolen. Since then, I've had little enthusiasm for continueing the work.

As it stands, I have the foam poured on top of the 'rope' in the front half of the boat. Due to the damp cold weather, the exposed 'rope' in the back half of the boat has shriveled up and will need to be replace before I finish the foam pour.

In a previous post, I mentioned that I had hired a private detective to check out a group of people that I suspected were the perpetrators. I had decided to allocate about a quarter of the value of the two motors to that endeavor. I've paid the last of two payments and am now awaiting a report from the detective as to whether or not he has found any leads.

If not, not sure what I'll do next. My new motor had been built with funds that were saved from a better time. It would be very difficult for me to duplicate the motor at this time.

Keep an eye out for a freshly painted engine closer to home. Look in th paper for a motor of exactly the same make but wierd or less HP. You will find it for sure. There are not that may people who need boat motors that don't have 1.

Oh Boom,

Sorry to hear that. I hope you get your motors back or at least the satisfaction of knowing the the thieves get caught.

It sucks, I'm sure. Gotta tell you I miss hearing about your project. Well, it sounds like the product shows a high potential for this use.

One comment about your detective; I believe that it is customary to "pay as you go" for their service. Like an attorney. The way you wrote about it makes me think you won't get any info until you have paid a pre-determined agreed upon amount of money, IE the full amount. Have you gotten any info? I'm kind of sticking my nose in here, so don't feel obligated to answer.

Regards,

Mark

Re: Yo Boomyal! Whats the latest with the disolving rope?

We agreed on predermined amount of effort at a specified charge. I started by paying half. Once he burned through that he gave me a progress report along with an option to finish investigating the suspected people. I think there were elven in all. At that point I paid the balance and am now awaiting his final report.

It is only conjecture that this group of people were responsible for the theft. They had the demeanor, the means and the opportunity to cart these motors out by hand, so they were worth investigating. If nothing turns up, they either did not do it or they have covered their tracks well. I cannot help but think that those motors are just sitting, being stored at this point. Whoever stumbled upon the oportunity to bag them would probably not have had an immediate use for them. It also seems to me that they would be difficult to sell or fence. Without tearing them apart they would not really know how to describe what they had. One of the motors was obviously used, the other was obviously new but the expense/cost/nature (stroked) of it would not have been readily apparent.

Another possibility is that it was done by someone who just happened to come thru the industial facility, by chance, and found the door to my container opened. We would not have anyway to identify them to investigate if that were the case.

just from what I've heard, That part of Washington is pretty wild.... Maybe you

:D ought to run them down your self..... Anyway, I think they will need more than motors to keep their boat afloat........keep one eye open and hang in there......Flash

They may have a buyer all ready. That is what happened to me in Medford Or. back in the 70's. New Chrysler motor never in the water. The owner of the boat shop bought They asked the owner of the boat shop if he would buy their motor because their boat sank. He asked for the model and serial numbers. From that he determined it was stolen and called the police. All they got was probation.

Yeah, GOF, that's what the Privite Detective said would happen if the perps who stole my motors were caught. Also, I did not have the serial numbers of my motors. Who woulda thought??

Boomyal, I'm really sorry about the motors. I know you're in a pretty large area, so they'd be hard to track, even if they did try to sell them. Too much space down there. What are your plans, if you don't recover the outboards?

Run an ad in the paper under articles wanted for an engine around the same horsepower you had. Maybe they will be greedy or stupid enough to call. Cheaper than a private eye. Also alert all dealers in your area with a description. Also check out the list of items in local auctions.

Both of these motors were SBF 302's. (one of course now 331) There would not be anything to really identify them for a boat. The 331 had the intermediate housing adaptor plate and splined coupler on it but only the marine savvy would now what they were for.

They could get swallowed into the automotive world without so much a ripple so I've mentally written them off.

Current plan is to get a low mileage '97 Ford Explorer 5.0 from a wrecking yard, clean it up, install my Edelbrock intake and Holey 4 bbl, slap a coat of paint on it, to match all of by beautifully detailed parts and be off down the waterway. I should be able to do that for a 1000.00 or less. I already secured replacements for the adaptor plate and splined coupler.

I've just listed my 1981 Honda XL 250S enduro on ebay to help pay for the motor. It only has 814 mi on it.

Thanks all, for your support and empathy.

Yes fireman. On two counts. The motor cycle sold for a good price for it's age AND Friday I secured a 2001 Ford Explorer 5.0L motor with 36k miles on it.

I should pick it up this week and begin the process of converting it over, cleaning it up and getting it painted to match all of my other previously prepared periferals.
