I talked to a buddy Sunday, he had gone out that day with his boat and when he went to put it on the trailer, it got stuck in reverse (88 Evinrude V4) due to a cable end coming off his linkage. So here he is trying to get his boat to the trailer and it's stuck in reverse, then he shuts it off and of course it won't restart, and he's drifting down stream!'

Well he got it under control and fixed the issue. That evening, my family and I put our little 15 foot Glasspar in the water. I back it most of the way down the ramp, then unhook the winch eye and get in the boat. I signal my wife to back the rest of the way down. I start the Honda and back the boat off the trailer. She pulls out to park.

I back over to the dock- and keep on backing! Now I'm stuck in reverse too! Well I can lever forward, lever back, give throttle, still in reverse. I do a couple loop de loops and end up back at the dock, here comes my wife, my 2 1/2 year old, and the 7 month old in his carrier down the ramp to the floating dock. There I am hanging over the transom.

The coupler from the mid leg to the lower unit had come un threaded. I re attached it and we were on our way. I have to quit associating with my buddy, he's just bad karma.:p

I don't believe it!

Rather than discontinuing your association, I think you should use it - when he tells you what happened on his boat, you'll know exactly what tools & parts you'll need on your next trip!

good ya found the problem.

perhaps a bit of pre launch inspection may have turned up the situation prior to it possibly becoming a real bum situation though......

Yup, could have seen it, maybe, but it was probably connected visually. Uses a long 12mm hex piece threaded that goes over the rod coming from the foot, with a jamb nut. If the jamb nut was spaced away from the hex part, then I would have seen it! I always run her on the flusher first too.

It's amazing how many times I've had to cobble something together to make the day or get it back to port! I had a steering cable stand-off break once; we lashed an oar to the engine cowling with the anchor line and used it as a tiller to get back in. A big ol' wet exhaust muscle boat took us under tow for about a mile until he overheated and crapped out, then we towed him in the rest of the wayto the dock! Looking back, those are often the tales we love to recall over a glass or two, rather than the days when all went right. Z
