Your opinion please: should I buy this boat?

Hello all, I posted this on thread in the VIP boat section, but it wasn't getting any traffic so I bumped it to here. I hope to join your community soon.

I am hoping to buy my first boat. I am looking for a openbow for coving, fishing, and some skiing. I have recently been negotiating with the man selling this boat. I was willing to go $4000 He would only come down to $4300 from $4500. The boat is winterized, but he said he would run it for me and rewinterize it if I want... I am very hesitant to buy a boat without getting it on the water. This price is pretty much in line with the NADA value, but seems much better than any other deal I've seen recently. (and my hobby for the last 10 years has been looking at boats on craigslist.) Most boats in this price range are around 10 yrs older. This will be my first boat and I am trying to get a good deal and avoid buying a lemon. it is only a 3.0, but that should be ok for my first boat. I'm kind of stuck on the $4000 but I would hate to miss out on a good deal for $300. what do you guys think?

Take it for a spin

If he is going to run it for you, get him to take it to the lake to run it. It sounds like a good deal. You didn't mention how old the boat is, but if it isn't very old you should look at it more for abuse than neglect. Neglect can be harder to spot. If you are spending $4000, I wouldn't fret too much about $300. You'll spend at least double that before you get it to the lake the first time (registration, dewinterizing, skis, tow ropes, the first prop you tear up on the boat ramp. . .)

Jim is absolutely right about running it on the water. Neglect may be the worst type of abuse to a boat. It will take it's toll fairly quickly and is sometimes very unforgiving. If the seller wants to sell, than he'll do it if the boat is everything he claims. It will take more time, fuel for his tow vehicle, and maybe put another hour on his motor. If the seller agrees, and you love the boat, give him the 4,300 deer. The boat and motor look good in the pictures. Take an experienced boater with you. A lot more than the motor may have issues on a boat. If he's not willing to take you, and your "knowledgable advisor" on the water, I'd thank him anyway; and walk away.
Take a boater safety course. You'll be really glad shortly after it begins.
Best of luck. Let us know how it goes.

Safe and happy boating always!!!

It is a 2000 and I do plan on taking a boater safety course.

Danny, Welcome to iboats. :)

Will he let you put a $50 or $100 deposit on it and then do a sea trial in the spring ??

Danny - If the pictures of the boat are recent, it looks like a steal at $4,300 to me. I bought my boat last November and was not able to get a sea trial. I did run the motor, put it in forward and reverse as well as thoroughly inspect the transom and hull for soft spots. All checked out well and I bought it without a sea trial. It turned out to be a great boat and we had a problem free season, over 100 hours last year. Bring a mechanic to inspect and run the engine, be sure the hull is solid and check the steering and gears (put it in forward and reverse). I think you can feel reasonably comfortable if those things check out. Also check the history of the boat....receipts for past work and such. Could be a great deal for you!

Sounds to me like the owner is confident in his boat and I don't think you can go wrong here. For a first boat that looks like a heck of a deal.

Good Luck

Check compression in each cylinder, check the LU oil for metal flakes, take her for a water test and bring a GPS speedo so you can verify that 45 MPH claim.

4300 is a good deal if all checks out......
