Last year I was listening to a call-in show on NPR and a caller made an excellent point. The Proper response to "Thank you" is "You're welcome". So why do most people these days make it into a contest? "THANK you." "Thank YOU." It's Rude! Here the first party is generously offering an olive branch and the responder is putting it back in his/her face which demands a response when the conversation should be over. I never really noticed it before that call, but it's almost always true and it bugs me every time I hear it. At least 85% of the time I hear "Thank YOU" in response to Thank you. What do YOU say when somebody thanks you?
