Would anyone happen to know where the zinc anode gets installed on a 1979 Johnson 140 outboard? For the life of me I can not figure out where it goes nor does that fabulous maintenance manual I purchased give you any idea. I have no clue as to what it looks like either which makes me believe there is currently no anode attached to the motor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all!

Possibly all because one was not fitted to that model.
Not so fashionable back in those days

Go to the parts catalog at http://shop.evinrude.com/ locate you model by year, hp and model number and see if you can find one mentioned ... I cant!

First fitted to 1982 models onwards and then from 1986 onwards one was also fitted to the bearing carrier ... see the parts diagrams for the '86 models

If you have good reason to fit one, bearing in mind that in 30 years it has not had one AFAICS, You can bolt one on the AV plate.
Best Advice though is not to leave it tilted down in salt water when not in use
but if you must then bolt one on.

You can mount teardrops on top of your A/V plate as I have. Click the thumbnail, please.

That's a Camp T20 or CMT20.

The OMC electronic parts catalogs for 1979 (epc.brp.com) list an anode kit under their heading "OB Accessories." The kit is 171637, which looks like a still current part. The anode appears to be a generic aluminum or zinc casting which is probably mounted on the transom hull-just under the engine. It is generic and should work with any hp engine. Since you have to drill two mounting holes thru the hull, I prefer the option that Ezeke has offered.

Thanks for the help guys. I will stick with Vic S.'s theory of if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

With due respect, if you operate in salt or brackish waters, you should use an anode or two; otherwise your bolts and steering arm will take up the task and you will not like the results.

Remember zinc is suitable for salt water.

Aluminium (actually an aluminium alloy containing a small %age of indium) is better for brackish water and is also suitable for salt water.

Magnesium is required in fresh water because both zinc and aluminium become coated with an oxide layer that renders them ineffective. It is however far too reactive for either brackish or saltwater.
