Zodiac Tube Failure

Hello all. My first post. Here goes:

I've got a problem. Need some information. I own a 21 ft. Zodiac 15 man Pro RHI with 150 HP E-tec. Purchased new in 2007. After a few months, tube separated from hull at bow, about three feet on each side. The flap tore out of the four screws holding it down. Zodiac said I hit something (which I didn't) or underinflated ( a possibility since bow tube had a slow leak, but I pumped it up regularly.) I paid for a repair...which lasted about three trips into ocean, when tube separated from bow to 2/3 of way aft coming back in over the bar...that was exciting.

Zodiac assumed no responsibility, said I didn't tie the "rope" at the bow. This rope, which I later found, is no more than a shoestring. Bought a new tube for nearly $7,000.

Going out over the bar a month ago took some 3 ft. breakers, and the starboard tube separated (ripped off the bead) from aft to 2/3 way toward bow! Initial response from dealer is, "Zodiac's heard about you Rinehart, you're the one who had the tube separation last year, and they won't warrant your current tube."

Since I got a Zodiac to go over the bar, (which requires navigating some pretty rough water and a lot of power)and was sold based on their reputation, I'm disapointed, of course.

Question is, what's with this tube separation? Is this really unusual, as they claim?

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is this a known "weak link" with this product?

Are these boats not really made for rough water, just rivers and lakes?

It doesn't make much sense to keep buying a new tube every year, especially since they don't even last a season.

Thank you

Well, there are lots of questions obviously but I'll tell you I've never heard of or seen an RHI do that. These boats are built exactly for what you are using it for. Something is clearly not right, but you need an expert to take a look at the boat in person.

i never really liked Zodiac ribs. If you excludethe small soft hull inflatables all the other product (MY OPINION) is not so good!

This is a very very poor attitude by Zodiac.

I'd be looking to take it further. Those tubes should last at least 10 years.

Sorry to hear about this really bad experience. I would sell the boat and never touch Zodiac again. I also looked at Zodiac and found them unreasonably priced for what they offered. At least your engine is good for another boat...

The boat should ideally be able to handle any sea conditions ..... I would tell Zodiac to take back their nonsense boat ..... if you want a proper inflatable, buy South African .... we weld our tubed, not glue them and a lifetime garantee on the seams ... zodiac needs to step up or shut up ....

On Greece this technic is consider as a weak point even on PVC and because most rib's are made from hypallon we always glue the tubes and they last a lot.
I 've seen rib's of 15-20 years old and they are still working!

If it were me, tubes wouldn't be the only thing splittin'. I'd be splittin' some wigs in the Zodiac shop and threatening to report them to the better business bureau if they did not do good for the defective mercandise. I could understand if you wre jumping 30 foot waves, but my gosh not by what you describe as normal use.

maybe you guys are just doing it wrong .... our welded tubes are guaranteed for life .... the material doesn't last as long as the seam .... that's got to tell you something ....

If the material does not last as long as the seams, maybe it is not seams that last long but rather the material that does not?

That's the other option!

deejaycee_2000 what kind of material do you use on your tubes?
As far as i know hypallon can't be weld, only on pvc is possible!

Re: Zodiac Tube Failure

can you post some photos of the tube failure ,we build tubes that are mechanically fixed for the MOD without these sort of problems ,it may be possible that we could make you a stronger set of hypalon tubes .regards paul tilley , www.tidel.biz

Re: Zodiac Tube Failure

That's a kind of pvc material? If yes then weld is a good technic but can't do it on hypallon-neopren!
