warning horn replacement

I have a "new to me" '98 Tracker with a 90ELPTO. realized today that i have no warning horn (scary thought). Its has a console dash ignition key switch with a separate throttle shift arm so theres no control box with the horn in it. The ignition key switch does not have a horn built into it...so like I said, no warning horn. I have found the purple and tan leads under the dash that would normally connect to the horn so here is my question; do I have to buy the exact mercury part/horn and or new key switch with a horn built in (like the service manual illustrates)...or can I just use any kind of horn that I can find that has 2 connections. My thought is that if the temp sensor opens the circuit and sends juice to the horn then it really doesnt matter what the horn is as long as it will accept the 2 leads and I can mount it in a way where it won't get wet and or damaged...and of course it's loud enough to hear or not so loud that i jump out of the boat haha..any thoughts?

Re: warning horn replacement

There is a NOS warning beeper on ebay right now I believe it was 9.00
go to ebay motors and click boat parts & accessories and type in oil/temp warning beeper and it will bring up a list of them.
hope this helps

Any 12VDC horn will work. You might get a marine version so it will be reliable. Kust so you know, when the motor overheats, the overheat sensor grounds the tan wire. The purple wire supplies voltage from the ign key whenever it is in the on position, and grounding the tan wire completes the circuit, activating the horn.

if that motor has oil injection, it will have other alarms as well. You might test each circuit to assure that work.

Ok, I did that and it brought up "0" entries.

I imagine you can get one at Radio Shack.. West Marine has them.

Good idea. It isn't a realy big item, just a buzzer/horn with a hot and ground wire. I will check that out.
thanks

Great call. Radio Shack, $1.99 Piezo Element 1500-3000Hz. The pic matches the one I have so it set me on more research. Found same type on bilge alarm kits etc. I knew it couldn't be too hard.

Thanks all.

Yep. Standard piezo buzzer is what you need.
