I am having problems with my 92 evinrude. Its a 115. When I go to start it, it just cranks. There is a red knob not real sure what it is but when you get it to the right spot it will crank. You have to do it everytime you want to start it. Would it be my carborator or something else?

The red knob is right in front when you take off the cover. U can twist it left or right. I put the oil in the gas myself if that helps. I don't know if im getting gas to the carbs or not. I did change the spark pluggs.

Why don't you just describe your starting procedure. Most starting problems are related to impropter starting procedure - especially with carbureted engines. Folks today are used to turn-key starting because of the fuel injected car/truck/newer boat engines and are not old enough to know how carbureted cars used to start. Try this approach:
1) Squeeze primer bulb until firm. If it doesn't firm up, fix the problem.
2) Raise the fast idle level about 1/2 way up.
3) Turn the key to RUN (not start) and push in on the key and hold it for a count of 7-8.
4) Turn the key to START.
5) When the engine starts be ready to push the key in momentarily if the engine begins to die off.
6) Lower the fast idle lever a bit to achieve a comfortable idle.

The red knob is very likely the primer manual switch. The primer solenoid serves the same function as a choke in that it sends extra fuel into the inlet port for starting. The knob in the manual position allows the engine to be rope started if you have a dead battery which would prevent the primer solenoid from operating. It may be the primer solenoid is not actuating when you push in the key so check it for proper operation. It should click as you push the key in.

Its not my first rodeo starting this boat. I have had it for a year and done all of what you guys said. Push key in for choke. Pumped bulb. Im not dumb, just asked a simple question. It does it everytime i go to start it no matter if i runned it already. Once I get it started, i will go to idle up and it just dies

Not a very nice response to someone trying to help you. Your initial post did not explain very much either.
Has the motor had a basic health check recently ???
Compression
Spark
Fuel delivery
Spark plug condition

Re: 115 evinrude motor starting problems

You asked a simple question to which there is no simple answer since all you talked about was the little red knob that you knew nothing about. That was explained and I suppose we we could have just guessed at what your starting procedure was which would have resulted in many back and forth responses which is like pulling teeth. If we have information up front rather "my engine won't start" we save a bunch of time. I merely explained what works along with a little historical data. A polite response of "yup, that's the way I do it but it still won't start" would have been welcomed. Stating things like: this has been getting worse for some time, tune up done on xx/xx/xx, compression is ok, spark is ok. Fuel is about 3 months old would be meaningful data. I don't get chased away easily so give us something to go on.

Sorry it sounded rude the post before that, that was edited was not the nicest post. The guy said basically I was an idiot and my question shouldn't have been asked. I am new to boats and there is a whole lot I don't know but I do know how to start it. I am very appreciative for all the replies i get. No, I haven't had a basic health check recently. I did change the spark pluggs on it. I was wanting to see what others say before taking it to the repair shop. Its pretty expensive around here and not a whole lot of money to spend. It cranks, the choke opens up when the key is pushed in, when the red knob is turned to the right spot it will start and run till I put it in gear and then it shuts off. Sorry again that my previous statement seemed a little rude was just frustrated with the previous guy. Thanks again for all the help I recieve on here.

Silvertip, I want to apoligize to you also. It was not your post that I was talking about the guy after you said to learn to start read the manual. I went and tried what you said b/c before I would pump the bulb and then put the choke in and start that way. So i set to run and held the key in for 8 secs then cranked, still nothing. When I push the choke in you can smell gas. Before the winter hit I put stabilizer in it and ran it. I did drain the gas and put some fresh in it. Its getting gas to it its just like it will not crank over without turning that knob to the right spot. I think it is my carb but not sure was just wanting to know if someone has had a simular experience and had some info. Sorry if I offended you that was not what I was aiming for.

OK just remember we are all only trying to help.
If money is a little tight then this forum is the place to be. You will literally save a small fortune by doing your own service and repair work.
The basic health check will give a great indication to us all what direction you should go next to solve the issue.
I'm off to work. I will check back later.
