Additionally, are you aware of the greenhouse gas emissions produced by cows? Cows are estimated to produce 18% of the worlds methane gas; now, I never studied a dino fart, but one could speculate...

I like your scientific method jtexas! :D :D but you forgot about the multi-millions of bison that used to roam the great plains. Wouldn't they have picked up where the Dinos left off?? ;)

Well, according to recent news, "global warming" is beyond the point of no return. So, eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we all die.

JB, you should have known from your experience in academia, that modern day science no longer comes up with theories based upon known facts, but rather come up with theories and then looks for any fact to back them... even if it means reaching for extremes.

BTW... Can't believe nobody here has said anything about Tony Blair pulling Britain out of the Kyoto agreement. And he's a Lib too! Go figure.

Thanks JTex....I was trying not to say dino fart. I didnt want to offend anyone with superior intellect on these matters.....ah hem!

I know exactly what your talking about. Can you imagine co-existing with the dino's?....

Possible early (enviroWacko)man saw the toll the dino's were putting on the environment ( not to mention the smell and lack of clean air act ) and decided to do something about it...millions of years later their slaughtered corpes became the crude we all so dependant on.....See it aint Bushes fault after all! ;)

Also, think of the impact the buffalo had before the white (enviro man) saughtered them for the hides....now I get it...they(we) didnt do it for sport we did it to stop global warming and clean air....it all makes sense now..

Huh?

Actually I do understand your ultimate point though; it is one that has been made for years. It may actually have some merit. We don't know if we are causing it, but we might be, so we should do what we can. The ONLY reason that I tend to agree with you is that the measures to combat any potential human impact are generally to use energy more efficiently. I am not clear why that is a bad thing for anyone.

What I would never support is to have efficiency forced on me to combat a potentially phantom issue. Soooo what YOU should suport is extremely high prices for Gasoline, Diesel, Natural Gas etc. etc. This way there will be an automatic reduction in energy use. It is that simple. Ask the Europeans . . . Never mind the fact that their fuel price difference is entirely tax which is wasted by inefficient gov't bureaucracy, that rates of unemployment are generally higher, the fact that they cram 5 people into cars smaller than a Honda Civic, that NOx and particulate emissions are higher due to the wide usage of diesels and that recreational use of fuel is largely restricted to the rich.

Edit: BTW, I LOVE diesels. I point out the diesel Catch 22 that environmentalists have got themselves into only as a reality. Diesels help reduce Carbon based emissions AKA CO2 GHGs etc. Period. But, environmentalist have been telling us that diesels are killing us. So what's a greeny to do?

as soon as dino farts entered the discussion, i knew i lost the argument. :) hey, maybe 6.5 billion humans don't affect the earth in any way. again, just seems like a silly idea to me.

Re: National Biased Company strikes again.

It's a known scientific fact that it takes 100,000 humans to emit as much gas as the average dino over a lifetime, although that number has been steadily declining since the invention of "biggie-sized value meals." :)

Still I have to agree it's hard to imagine that changing the composition of the atmosphere could have no effect on the weather. It's what inclines us to believe "environmentalists."

But back to JB's original assertion, totally irresponsible, yet typical, journalism presenting a self-styled "environmentalist" as authority, rather than a credentialled meteorologist (which is actually a scientist, in case anybody didn't know that; not all TV weathermen are meteorologists).

[p.s. LOL @ oddjob: "enviro-man" :D I feel so much better about myself now! LOL]

I always thought the ozone acted like a big thermostat for the eath when its closed the earth slowly heats up and when it gets to hot the ozone opens realesing air and cooling the planet,it opens and closes a little constantly.wasnt there some paper about all the suvs in the world couldnt do as much damage to the enviroment as one volcano eruption?

Also known is the fact that males gas-pass 14 times per day. With that knowledge and your known scientific facts, what is the volume and concentration of the average male gass-pass.

That has to be ascertained to determine impact.

JB and friends, Do you guys think the world is still flat?

Iread the remarks that sounded like because we can not direct hurricanes how can humans damage the environment. And this was by some of the big time name callers.

Oh and oddjob, Did you hear about the spagetti that Polo brought back from the far east?

Re: National Biased Company strikes again.

Well, I watched the MSNBC on the issue, and they presented one scientist's opinion, who thought it could be caused by global warming, and later a different scientist who suggested it was not clear.

So what's wrong with that? Are they banned from offering the opinions of others, clearly identified as opinion, when they differ from yours?

And absolutely gas prices may well force us into doing something anyway. It is inevitable. The only reason no one yet is very serious about alternative energy sources is that they for now are not cost effective. Perhaps at $5/ gal, they will be more attractive. Ford, FWIW seems to think so.

And yep, I drive an SUV. Winter travel in the north on the Trans Canada and Northern Michigan require a 4x4, for me, at least.

Re: National Biased Company strikes again.

The fact of the matter is we only have at the most 70 years of accurate data collected on weather changes.

I think that worrying about global warming is a bit premature. Over the past 2000 years, the estimates indicate that there hasn't been any sort of variance more than 1 degree. Some climate studies say that if the Greenhouse gases as well as the solar activity were to remain constant, the temperature would automatically raise by 0.5 to 1.0 degrees C over the next 100 years. That would indicate to me, since we haven't really raised more than 1 degree C over the past 2000 years that there is no human-generated global warming at all.

There are two other things that should be considered. First, the equipment and record keeping being used to record the temperatures. I'd like to think that everyone can agree that the instruments used to record temperature have dramatically increased in quality over the past 100 years. So, doesn't it make sense that there is a possibility that the temperatures were always increasing - its just that they didn't have accurate equipment in 1567 which could measure temperature changes to the 100th of a degree?

Also, aren't we getting closer to the sun? Shouldn't we be getting warmer as we move closer to the sun? Doesn't anyone thing that is a possibilty as well?

Sean

There are LOTS of 4WD cars that get great fuel economy, and they handle better. Try again . . . Money where your mouth is?

Re: National Biased Company strikes again.

Aside from th name calling and the silly statements, there is one issue here that cannot be disputed. Man has been measuring and recording things in nature for not an eye-blink in geographic time. The Earth has been here for maybe 5 BILLION years- that's 5,000,000,000 years. Man has been around for maybe 3 MILLION of those years. Maybe. And we didn't even know how to write anything down until 10,000 years ago. Measurements on temps and the like started 100 years ago. It's like trying to determine the trend of a football game by seeing a momentary blip on the TV screen. We don't have enough info to make an informed guess.

I don't know that we will ever be able to determine if global warming is a man-influenced phenomenon. I do know that we need to do whatever we can to reduce or eliminate the waste and pollution that we produce. That is an undeniable fact.

Getting all fired up about this is useless. You just can't make a decision based on the data we have now.

UFM82

Re: National Biased Company strikes again.

My old high school chums have a yahoo group. Grad 68. We get into some spirited arguments. I was the smarta$$ in school with common sense, and I should know better that to argue a theory with a nerd, but this is the latest take on GW. Lived just off a river that we would all skate on. West suburbs of Chicago. Got pretty polluted back in the 60-70's, but always froze, and since cleaned up. But it doesn't freeze anymore, so all the nerds yell toxic waste, and GW. None of the idiots ever thought to think of the million people that have built upstream, cementing everything over, and of course, with out all that water not going into the ground, it heads for the river, which is flowing twice a fast. and running water does not freeze unless it gets a hell of a lot colder than normal. Go figure

Maybe it doesn't freeze because of global warming?
