Diesel oil has more zinc in it, the zinc reduces wear. Sure regular oil not just Merc oil will also work. That said, you bought the motor from MM, why not take their lead and use what they recommend.

If you run high detergent diesel oil it is good to start from day 1 with it in your new motor. Ive seen what happens when you stick it in an old motor, causes all sorts of interesting and damaging $$ processes. I like MM recommendation.

Job is complete. So it was determined I floated a valve probably from to high of RPM. Question is can these motors handle 4800 rpm or not? I like to run wide open at times but don't need this mess again. Marine shop also found out the previous owner put high altitude gears in the drive, I'm going to see how this motor handles the 21" prop but I'll likely have to increase to a 22 or 23. I'm more into top speed then hole shots as I don't water ski.

Ayuh,.... It oughta handle 4800 rpms, but you said you were spinnin' 5300 rpms,....

Donno what yer talkin' 'bout with the " Marine shop also found out the previous owner put high altitude gears in the drive,"....
The 3.0l uses the 2:1 ratio as stock, 'n there is no lower gear set,....

They indicated the ratio is 2.41

Ayuh,..... I've never heard of a 2.41 gear ratio in an Alpha drive, 'n I've never heard of a 3.0l motor run with a Bravo drive,....

Yeah I don't know, and don't know how to find out. The drive is an alpha 1 gen 2 I believe. The dealer told me there was some record somewhere of the previous owner installing high altitude gears in it and that was the ratio. If it indeed does have that ratio I assume a bigger prop is the answer, can't take the boat out to see how she runs as all lakes are frozen.

No Title

Pulled the head this morning, this is what I found. No expert but I dont think part of the intake valve should be busting holes through the piston!!! To high RPM cause this?

Whatever happened, it also looks like it was leaking water out of the head gasket below the head. Not sure if a hydrolck would break a valve, but it's possible. high rpm caused valve "float" and may be a factor, or a rod broke and destroyed it?

Water is from a bolt coming lose on the thermostat last summer, water went everywhere when I was out on the lake. Inspected all the rods they look good, only damage is that intake valve going through the piston. What doesn't make sense is I had no compression on #2 and I can't see a thing wrong with it. I can't even see or feel any scores on the cylinder walls. Any idea if I could sale this motor to someone wanting to rebuild it, say $500.
