Time and money, and yes, you, I repeat, yes you can buy what they raced!

LOL

Actually back in the 50,s the cars were taken right off the showroom floor .I just watched one race from back in the day and the driver actually rolled down the drivers side window.A interesting series to watch is" the golden age of nascar:, which is on youtube and is very interesting to say the least.Im not sure when they defiantly became not stock as in highly modified. The thing is way back you could easily identify a car on the track ,today all the cars look alike .My personal favorites are the mid sixties cars and the mid to early seventies ,particularly the Purolator(sp?) mercury .While im at it ,my all time fav f1 style cars are the 66 to 68 ones.

Back in the day, many the cars were driven to the track, the spares and parts were unloaded, the headlights taped up and they went racing. After the race was over, they loaded parts and spare, took the tape off and drove home so they had a way to work the next day. Since they raced hard, more than a few walked to work.

Correct me if im wrong , but didn't the old saying race on sunday sell on monday come from nascar or was it from early drag racing? Probably more than one racer standing on the side of the highway with their thumbs out GA.!

I think "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday" is attributed to Bob Tasca of Tasca Ford in Rhode Island from their drag racing at the height of the muscle car era.

Love stock car, watched it every time it was on. When nascar came in, I found something else to watch or do

It used to be the guy with the fastest car won! Then if the same brand kept winning they'd find a way to ban that model! Remember the Superbird? I was done watching it by the end of the 70's.

And the Grand National.

I think it is funny when the pace car is a Camry and there is the nascar version of the Camry behind it. Way different.

What kinda' speeds were they achieving in the 50s, 60s and 70s? I've never been able to get into NASCAR, but I do like things like drag racing, grand prix and rally. Today's NASCAR is running around 200MPH, right? What were they doing "back then?"

In the 70's they were running 180 and above, the Superbirds were able to attain speeds over 200 regularly, the speeds are really not that much different than they have been for the last 40 years, but I do have to say, the cars are a heck of a lot safer than they were in the those days.

todays cars run restrictor plates at daytona and talledega. i heard rusty ran an unrestricted car at talledega a few years ago and hit about 227mph. so while it doesn't sound like they gained much in the past 40 years...they have. the regular engines today put out about 850hp where the restrictor plate engines are probably closer to about 700hp (just a guess there). not sure what the hp ratings were in the 70's. also, todays rules restrict the engines to 358c.i. not sure what they were in the later 70's but in the late 60's i don't think there was a restriction. although richard petty ran whatever he wanted even after they put a limit in:lol:

They were running big blocks, the 426 hemi, the 427 SOHC, the 427 Chevs. what many call the boat anchor motors these days, those were some really large heavy motors, the displacement to power ratio was quite a bit less than it is now a days, but all of those be boat motors were WAY under rated for what they were actually putting out!

I remember before the restrictor plates and they could qualify in different trim/engine. If I remember right they could get up to 210mph at Dega.

I know I sure as hell wouldn't want to go 200 mph in my 68 Charger! Though I have buried the speedo needle! But that's when I was young and bulletproof! These days I just like to smoke the tires when at a light next to one of those foreign tuners!

MOD EDIT: little foreign cars, tuned out with fat, "farty" soundin' mufflers - but let's go easy on the phrases that can be seen as offensive.
