Rebuilding Mercruser 165 Inline 6

Here's what your engine will look like when you pull it. You can see what needs to come out. The rear mounting bolts go through either side of the bell housing as pictured here.

No Title

All right! I removed the 2 rear mounting bolts and didn't touched the transom.

I'm still wondering how to remove the elbow, it seems stuck.

For the front, as AllDodge said I didn't touch the 2 lag bolts, so what do I need to remove? There's a kind of nuts (circled in yellow), is it this?

On the elbow - you need to remove the hose clamps. Use a pick or screwdriver to loosen the seal of the hose. Then use a large rubber mallet or something similar to break the elbow loose from the manifold. (Assuming you have the bolts or nuts removed!)

Thank you guys for your help! Engine is now out of the boat and in the shop for rebuilding.

We found out that there was a normal camshaft, not even a marine one, installed in the engine. Should I go with a marine one or just buy a normal one since this was what was already inside?

There is no such thing as a marine crank shaft and if you hear the machine shop correctly, I would suggest going and picking up your motor and take it to someone else. The crackshaft is the same crankshaft in all other motors of the same size. There are differences in cams, one for a car or a truck. You want a truck cam shaft for low end torque.

Edit: but in your case there should be no difference with the I6 cam

The shop said that the cam was the truck cam, nothing special. I thought there was a difference between a normal and a marine cam. For example, this website sells a marine cam:

As for the marine and truck thing, the motor used for the I6 are all the same, and a marine cam is a truck cam. Back when these engines were being made Mercruiser bought them straight off the line the GM is using. In later years GM made car and truck motors different and Merc would always buy the truck motor.

You may need a new cam if yours is worn, but someone would have to measure the lift a duration.

Yes I definitely need a new cam, the guy said there was 1/4" difference between the "flaps" (whatever it's called).

Sounds good and also good to know your machine shop is doing you right. The cam you found isn't bad, could also call your local auto parts stores and see what they want. Not saying they have it, but bet they can get it

AllDodge has it right. There is nothing special about the cam. Truck cam is good. Do go with the metal timing gear over the fiber gear.

The shop didn't talked about changing anything for the timing system other than the gasket. Should I change the gear?

Your motor should have come with steel/cast gears. Fishermark was saying if (that is IF) the gears need to be replaced (most don't) make sure you get solid cast gears and not a fiber coated gear. the fiber coated gears do not last

Guys, I'm looking for a camshaft thrust plate, I can't find it anywhere, even in the US. Anybody would have one?

Or maybe the GM part number, I could only find the part # for Pioneer brand.
