He'd probably smack me if I only offered $4500.:watermelon:

So what if he did? If my father taught me anything there is no such thing as an embarrassing offer. He once bought a condo in Florida for 30K and they were asking 50. He offered $25000.00. A wealthy family selling Grand Ma's condo that she would never move from and they just wanted to get rid of it.

All he can say is no. Condition isn't everything but it is important. A mint condition K car isn't worth much. That Capri wouldn't get $5000.00 CDN here. It's just a fact. When he upgraded the outboard he put too much money into the boat and now wants to get it back, he won't and has to come to terms with that fact. It's 24 years old. If he was smart he should pop an older 90 horse on it and sell the 115 for 4K and sell the boat for the $4000 it's worth.

I know the "L" drives from around 89' are something to stay away from here. I don't have anything against Bayliners, they made some great fishing boats. The other thing I wanted to say is I wouldn't buy a boat that went through the rigors of towing skiers and tubes.

Yeah, i had an L drive..... that said I've like the bayliners I've owned.

Offer low, after a week of it not selling up it a grand. Pay what you want its your boat. The difference of say 2 grand over maybe 5 years you will own it isn't much.

When I was looking for a boat a couple months back.....I would shoot people offers thru text some would say NO WAY some would never even ANSWER.......I bought my 2001 Bayliner Capri 1950 the guy was asking $6,000 for it.....I towed it home after buying it for $3000 So I would NOT be worried about shooting him an offer at whats it worth.....just be AWARE if the seller feels like you insulted him.....you may never hear from him again

When I bought my Carver last year the seller was asking $19900 which was on the high er end of the scale when compared to other boats of the same model and year. My first offer was $15000. The seller countered at $19000. I countered at $17000 that was to include the remaining seasonal dockage. That offer was accepted. It never hurts to go low as a seller can either say no or counter your offer.

I am glad that Bayliner has better quality starting in the late 80's versus late 90's
Sorry, Bayliner quality was bad from the mid to late 80's all the way into the early 90's. By the late 90's quality did improve a lot. I would buy another brand of boat if it was from the early 90's

Brunswick bought Bayliner in 1986

I had a 1987 Bayliner 2150. Horrible quality.

I am beginning to think there is a problem with the boat or the owner. All last week he put me off by saying he was sick. Last night he tells me I can't see the boat because his wife scheduled yearly maintenance and the boat is with his mechanic. Who spends the money to service their boat just to sell it? The last text I sent I asked if the price was negotiable. No reply from him. I am not waiting on this guy any longer. I'll keep looking. I am not in any hurry at all.

Looks like a nice boat and great engine. FWIW, a month ago I just bought a 96 sea ray 18' with the 4.3 liter engine for $4500 and that included a new fish finder, perfectly cleaned, etc.

I wrote off that boat. The owner wold never let me look at it. My last text on Sunday was "is the price negotiable". No reply. The heck with him. Just made an offer on another boat today. Will start a new thread if I get it.

I pretty much buy most of my power sports and boats just slightly used because you don't pay the 7.5% sales tax on used boats from private parties in my state as it should be. They pay the depreciation, I get nearly new stuff that they bought but didn't have time to use plus for the sales tax saved, buy some accessories. That seems to be the one time I have to really deal with strangers and really realize how many people are idiots or liars or both in this world.
Buying used stuff is so frustrating made worse by the fact in your town there are a thousand people doing the same thing as you looking at that same CL listing or whatever.

Here in WA we pay sales tax no matter what and the tags cost more on a boat if the value is higher. My old boat was around $25 a year and this one is around $50.

Sure but we have a 9.85% income tax in my state so I suppose it makes sense whereas in WA, you don't have that burden. The second you buy a used boat from a dealer however, you pay sales tax. To clarify though, we still pay sales tax on the trailer even from a private party. Paying a 53% or 54% effective income tax rate I.E. you earn 100$ for the year and you get to keep 46$ (State and Fed combined) when you live in MN is not uncommon for us including our property taxes but excluding our sales taxes. Point being state to state things can be extremely deceiving.

in CA we have both and a lot higher peak income tax rate than 9.85%.

And not sure why taxes have anything to do with the topic of this thread.

It wasn't meant to be. I am a firm believer in that when buying anything. Good boat hunting, it's the fun part for me.

Topic of this thread is a 1993 Bayliner

The point if I recall when I posted was someone comparing a no personal income tax state but with a sales tax on used boats to another state that has no sales tax on used boats but a personal income tax. You really can't compare from state to state so grain of salt.

Yeah...that person was you and has nothing to do with a 1993 Bayliner.
