With smoke I'm thinking your engine coupler, but the crash, crunch and grind, maybe the outdrive as well. Sure hope I'm wrong

ok back at home and not typing on the phone.

Started fine, sat at the dock to warm up as always. No wake zone for about two minutes. Fast hull speed for another 5 as always then a slow on plane to prob half throttle for maybe 10 min max. used full trim tabs so didn't need any big power to plane out.

Site note my tach only works about half the time but I have a good ear for anything sounding off. That said, I was thinking i was hearing a slight loss in RPM maybe 2-300 every 15 seconds or so then back up - I was just tuning into that to really listen to make sure i wasn't hearing things when 'it' happened.

Oil pressure read about 60 before 'it' happened, temp was cool well under 180 don't remember now but was not overheating

No oil in bilge and didn't think to look but no oil in the water - I'm pretty anal about picking up on that and if there was a catastrophic failure to release a bunch of oil I would have noticed. For sure none when back at the ramp, about 20 minutes after 'it' happened.

I ran it last year about maybe 20 hours, no issues. This was first trip of this year. On Friday the 13th....

Parked her at storage, no oil on outdrive and tilt works fine.

Good news is the side bunks i put on this week worked wonders loading by hand (just me) on a shallow ramp with a decent crosswind and the tabs repair I did yesterday is a success.

I'm researching my rehab thread now but I think I'm just over the 3 year SEI warranty.

I might have used more adjectives than needed, but in the three seconds it took me to properly react and shut down that is what my mind heard.

Maybe what you heard was the engine coupler coming apart and clunking around in the bell housing. Fist think I would do is pull the drain on the drive and check lube. Next would be pulling the drive and check the coupler.

you could put it in gear and try to pull-propel your way along. however it wont get far.

Remembered something else, not sure if it will tell you anything but just after i got on plane the rpms dropped quite a bit, like i hit the throttle with my knee which i have done. So i just gave it more gas. But in thinking about it i really dont think i did hit it.

Good new, sorta. Got tot he boat finally. Folks came to visit so been busy. Pulled the drain plug on the lower unit and only the normal shavings for a three year old SEI. Didn t drain allthe way, just abou a half cup and nothing more. Do i need to drain all the way or was that enough?

Drain it all out, let it sit in the pan over night, then drain into another container. If there is any metal, it will be laying on the bottom of the pan

will do next weekend. Folks flew out yesterday and i'm off to Raleigh now. I've only pulled one outdrive, a long time ago, it was a dreaded OMC that locked up from the shift cable issue. If anyone has a good thread or youtube on pulling it would be appreciated and or one showing what i'd be looking at.

southkogs - if you see this you have any good mechanics up your way? I'm done with mine. It spent most of last summer at the shop after the transom repair due to leaks. They never could get it right and even re-pulled the motor once. I've got a feeling this was caused by not aligning and regardless if they pulled it, and the customer asked what else a 40 year old motor needed doing while it was out (I did ask and they knew I had no previous service records) I would think that would be a part that should have been replaced.

Ayuh,.... Controller in "Forward", the 6 nuts ya see, 'n the trim rams, then pull,....

It weighs 'bout 80lbs,... By adjustin' the wagon jack, ya can probably roll it off on the skeg, 'n not have to lift it,....
