Hello everyone. Had a slipping clutch Dog on my 1974 50hp Johnson. I was able to get everything apart and got a new old stock clutch dog. Problem I'm having is installing the pin that holds it to the propeller shaft. The pin goes though the shifter control that has ball bearings and a spring. I can't figure out how to push back the spring loaded ball bearing and then push the pin through the gear, shifter and prop shaft. Is there some trick to this. Also when I took it apart the ball bearings and spring were in this order from the clutch dog (pin--ball-spring-ball-ball). The diagram shows (spring-ball-ball-ball). What is the correct order. Thanks.

Thank you, I have the printed manual and it makes no specific reference as to re-installing the pin.

dfgtye, I have no idea how your clutch dog is installed, but on my '76 40 HP Johnson engine, there is a little beveled area on the clutch dog where the spring compresses for the two balls to be squeezes enough to get the clutch dog to slide on. Not sure yours is made the same. But if so maybe that will help you out. :noidea:

I dont think your '76 40hp is a hydraulic assisted shift like the OP' s '74 50hp. So very different

Vic. You were right. I was looking at the wrong pages. Not the hydro assist. Saw the tool. Looked in my drawer of specialty tools and had one already. Worked perfect. Took about about 2 min to complete. Thanks. MJS.
