Topside paint

Can anyone give me advice on topside paint? I need to paint my cockpit,fore deck and bridge. I don't want to use a spray gun. Just roll and tip. I have been reading good things about rust oleum topside paint. Any suggestions? I have a 1967 41 Hatteras.

IMHO you don't need to pay the extra cost of the topside paint. Rustoleum Pro oil based paint and the added Acrylic Enamel Hardener will yield a tough and durable job. Check out the painting link in my signature.

^ wood has that topside paint thing down pat I used the tractor paint on my trailer that stuff is solid!, on my boat I used 100% acrylic we will see how it holds up, my boat is a tesat bed of ideas that I wanted to personally test for longevity , we shall see lol

I thought your weren't suppose to use an oil based paint on fiberglass? Only acrylic or epoxy. What is the ratio when mixing? Also can I use the rustolem grit in the paint for non slip?

Joey, I can't explain the oil based issues. I'll let others do that. But most any paint can be mixed with sand to give it some grit to help with slippage on a boat floor. JMHO

Really looking good there wood. Question for ya? Would this be right for rusto as well?
2cups of Rusto paint
1/4 cup of their thinner. If you did not buy any it is a 50/50 mix of Mineral Spirits and Xylene, so you can make your own.
1 oz. of hardener.
MIX WELL. At least 5 minutes. Do NOT SHAKE and introduce air bubbles.

With the hardener the Paint is worthless after 8 hrs in the mixing bucket.

Paint Your Boat with Tractor Paint...Say What!!!

It has all the details you need. Rustoleum paint and Majic Tractor Paint have basically the same formulation soooo. The technique described works for any Oil Based Acrylic Alkyd based paint. I'd suggest the Roll n' Roll technique described in the Link. Works really well. I's also mix a quart at a time and use 2oz of hardener per quart.

Hey -wood glass thanks so much. I just finished the first coat of topside paint on my boat. It came out beautiful. On a 41 boat I used 2 1/2 quarts of paint. The boat came out unbelievable. People from all over the marina were coming to look at it. Another few coats and I'll be all done. Here's some pictures of the boat.

Hahaha, thanks so much Wood.
I have a question about my cockpit. My boat is all fiberglass, no gel coat whatsoever. There are spots on the floor where I scraped the paint and got it down to the glass. I sanded the paint to feather it in. Should I now fill the voids with epoxy? What do you think?

If they are NOT to deep and only scratches then filling with epoxy and then re-painting should work just fine

Hey wood, I have a few roller marks and in some spots its not as shiny? What are your recommendations? This is the third coat. Please let me know. Its gonna be nice this weekend.
