I bought a boat last year that appeared to have always been garage kept. The entire boat appeared to be in great condition with the 40 horse Yamaha looking like it could be on the showroom floor. Had it out a couple times last summer and things went well. When I took it out of storage a month ago, as I was running the motor with the muffs on it seized up and stopped. I quickly figured out that the problem was in the lower unit, very hard to turn and making a grinding noise. I removed the oil plug and water came out and with the muffs on it was pouring out from the oil hole. Took the lower unit off and the engine started immediately, of course I didn't run it long since there was no water running through it. I then set out to get the lower repaired and was told from a few sources it was impractical to do so. I found a few used lowers in the $500 range but have opted to not go that route over concern that I would get a bad one or that something else would come up and parts availability would be an issue. I really didn't like this motor that much anyway due to the noise and restrictions on 2 strokes here in CA. So I'm wanting to repower.

I did a lot of research on transom rot and have core tested it. My interpretation is that its dry and with the condition of the rest of the boat (not even a crack on the vinyl), I'm feeling like it may be worth putting a new motor on and having a reliable set up to take my friends and 7 year old daughter out on the water. Couple issues I'm having is deciding horsepower. The nameplate says 90 max and 1200 pounds total, 900 pounds people. This seems to indicate the design is for 300 pounds motor, fuel and gear. The old 2 strokes from that era were obviously lighter, with the current 40 horse being 160# and a 90 horse from that era being around 250#.

I'm looking at a Suzuki DF60 I have negotiation at $7400 otd with controls and I do the install. The weight is 229 pounds. Also have a Honda BF60 negotiated otd for $8500 also with me doing the install. That motor weighs 239. I'm feeling like these weights are the max that should be put on this boat based on the nameplate and the weight of the motors of the era it was designed and built in. Wondering what people's thoughts are on that?

If I went with a new 90 horse I would be pushing 400# with fuel which seems excessive. Based on the performance of the 40, I feel like a 60 would be fine but don't want to spend all this money and have a boat that is really underpowered.

My expectations are just to be able to take a couple friends and do a little tubing, and cruise and fish a bit. Not in need of a speed boat. Any thoughts on all this would be extremely helpful. I'm relatively new to boating and haven't found someone with experience to bounce all this off of. Thanks in advance.

Well I'm a tad biased, having owned the 115 Honda, so my vote would be for the Honda. If it's anything like mine was, it'll be a pleasure to own. Whisper quiet, easy maintenance, etc. To give you an idea with the engine running, all I heard at idle was the water out of the tell tale hitting the lake. No exaggeration. My cousins and uncles were always shocked when they'd tell me to start it and I'd show them it was already running.

My uncle has a 75 Yamaha 2 stroke oil injected so I'm familiar with the running characteristics.

No idea on Suzuki, haven't run one.

Looks like you hit on the two lightest 4 Strokes as the Mercury and the Tohatsu are heavier...still within the range of your estimated 250lbs on the transom though.

Definitely leaning toward the Honda, if the customer service at the dealer here was better I already would have pulled the trigger.

Any feedback on how a 60 will do performance wise? Am I on the right track thinking going larger will be too heavy for this boat?

I see you're going from a 40HP to a 60HP so you'll get a good boost in performance. How much I honestly couldn't answer.

I checked the specs on your boat and Iboats has it listed as 15' length. I would think you'll be happy with the 60HP and I personally wouldn't go to 90HP unless I was able to shave down the weight to numbers you mentioned.

Thanks Brian, good to know my mindset was right on the weight factor.

Any feedback from you or anyone else on these prices I was quoted? I'm shocked how bad the dealers are here in SoCal. The only Honda one I could get a quote from said "I'm not working that hard for the deal" when I said lets move forward but I need to finance through Honda for the promotion. He said "it takes over an hour to do the financing". I guess everyones so busy right now that this type of sale is low priority. The guy then told me to go ahead and send in my application last week and hasn't responded since. My credit is top notch so its not that. Almost drove me to buy the Suzuki.

I'd take a recommendation on a good Honda dealer here in SoCal if anyone knows one.

Sorry can't help you much on pricing as it varies by region and by season. I paid around 10k for mine and that was with my 120 Force as trade in fodder which had less than 30 hours on it at the time. Then again, Merc just dropped the Force line at the time I was off loading it. DISCLAIMER: This was 2000 so this is 17 year old data!

As for financing...if you can get it all done in an hour, I'd be dancing in the streets. Last purchase took a couple months to complete and I'm still not thrilled with the yahoos I'm dealing with in terms of my financing. I'll be working with a couple local banks to refi when I get a few free moments.

At least here in WNY, the most I have to travel is another hour to get to a different dealer so you might want to check Honda's website to see who is an hour or so away to see if they're more interested in your business. Here they may be climbing over themselves to get it as we're swamped. Literally. Like can launch from a parking lot - no ramp required. If you don't mind waiting and possibly shipping charges, you may want to check out all the marinas along the shore of Lake Ontario here in NY. LOTS of them are underwater and *may* just want to offload some stock as a majority are loosing alot of money - their slips are underwater. Just sayin.

Nobody makes a bad outboard these days that I've heard of. Closest dealer for service might sway me one way or the other. You want at least 70% of the max rated HP for decent performance. A 3 cylinder 60+ should do great on that boat. I don't think I'd go for a 90 if the weight was a good bit more. I have no input on prices as I think they're all pretty insane on new outboards.

Theses prices and the condition of my powerhead are making me wish I could just find a good lower for cheap
