I bought a boat last year that appeared to have always been garage kept. The entire boat appeared to be in great condition with the 40 horse Yamaha looking like it could be on the showroom floor. Had it out a couple times last summer and things went well. When I took it out of storage a month ago, as I was running the motor with the muffs on it seized up and stopped. I quickly figured out that the problem was in the lower unit, very hard to turn and making a grinding noise. I removed the oil plug and water came out and with the muffs on it was pouring out from the oil hole. Took the lower unit off and the engine started immediately, of course I didn't run it long since there was no water running through it. I then set out to get the lower repaired and was told from a few sources it was impractical to do so. I found a few used lowers in the $500 range but have opted to not go that route over concern that I would get a bad one or that something else would come up and parts availability would be an issue. I really didn't like this motor that much anyway due to the noise and restrictions on 2 strokes here in CA. So I'm wanting to repower.
I did a lot of research on transom rot and have core tested it. My interpretation is that its dry and with the condition of the rest of the boat (not even a crack on the vinyl), I'm feeling like it may be worth putting a new motor on and having a reliable set up to take my friends and 7 year old daughter out on the water. Couple issues I'm having is deciding horsepower. The nameplate says 90 max and 1200 pounds total, 900 pounds people. This seems to indicate the design is for 300 pounds motor, fuel and gear. The old 2 strokes from that era were obviously lighter, with the current 40 horse being 160# and a 90 horse from that era being around 250#.
I'm looking at a Suzuki DF60 I have negotiation at $7400 otd with controls and I do the install. The weight is 229 pounds. Also have a Honda BF60 negotiated otd for $8500 also with me doing the install. That motor weighs 239. I'm feeling like these weights are the max that should be put on this boat based on the nameplate and the weight of the motors of the era it was designed and built in. Wondering what people's thoughts are on that?
If I went with a new 90 horse I would be pushing 400# with fuel which seems excessive. Based on the performance of the 40, I feel like a 60 would be fine but don't want to spend all this money and have a boat that is really underpowered.
My expectations are just to be able to take a couple friends and do a little tubing, and cruise and fish a bit. Not in need of a speed boat. Any thoughts on all this would be extremely helpful. I'm relatively new to boating and haven't found someone with experience to bounce all this off of. Thanks in advance.
