Ok here we go, this is my boat and my 79 Mopar 115hp, the power tilt n trim is giving major issues, the el3ctric motor is shagged cant get a replacement without mortgaging the house, the lower pin that holds the shock, trim unit and tilt ram is siezed fast, trim unit is siezed, shock weeps oil, so my fix for this is

get the grinder out cut the lower bolt outside of shock and tilt ram and throw that stuff in the scrap pile, my method to deal with this,
im using two merc inline tilt n trim rams, im fabricating the lower bracketry and transoms mounts for the merc rams, running a new aftermarket trim n tilt remote pump,
seen this set up done on a 135 , it allows the engine to be tucked right down snug against the transom and comes up really qwick! Way faster then any factory Mopar stuff .
My engine is a 115 Charger, it has one piece gear box with stainless prop.

Ok so what do I need to ask you mob,
My boat is purely for fishing, I hang around 20 mile off shore and the Chrysler doesn’t stop.
My engine come of a Bullet ski boat the prop I cant find the pitch on it what would you recommend pitch wise, I dont want fast out of the hole I need it lug along all day but if I need to head into shore coz of a storm I want it to fly along
As Im paranoid about cooking the motor I’m running a temp gauge, psi gauge, I want to fit a pisser outlet to it, it had one fitted but the fitting and fittings used wasnt upto spec, I was told to not run a pisser and the Chrysler dont have a heat issue they have a pressure issue and the pisser might over tax it, thoughts on this ?

I think the "pisser" wastes cooling water if it is like many where the water comes from the top of the head.
This water can be better utilized flowing down the head to cool.
I think that with the temp and pressure readings you are better off with out the tell tale and their indication is n the dash and not behind you at the motor where you might overlook it anyway.
You didn't say if your unit was premix, but I assume it is and that would be more reliable than an injection system.
I think that the Chrysler is fairly mechanical reliable, but the electrics need to be kept in good condition and spares on board along with tools would be a very good idea.
A good inspection program with spares should help greatly.
Probably more motors die from neglect than any other reason.
That being said I believe in benign neglect to some extent.
Don't make problems where none exists.

Yes it runs premixed fuel no VRO , the psi gauge is great coz if your pump fails u know straight away rather then seizing the engine 5 secs after the heat buzzer goes off

You can put a tell tale on, but a pressure gauge would be better and not bleed off cooling water

G'day mate,
l have a 70 hp Skier which has had a " pisser " fitted to the top of the head at some stage and then blocked off, maybe because " they " ran out of time on the day to run the hose down through the bottom cowling, there's no hole there but l'm really just guessing why,

we drilled a outlet hole, put a hose on it, replaced the fitting and it pumps well, giving a degree of confidence that the impeller is pumping still,

we've only had this model since feb and it was bought only to get out to a boat on a swing mooring or a quick fish on the way back,

we have other boats so this is mostly relegated to carrying out 12th man duties,

we have had to replace the starter solenoid ( had a spare ) and the CD unit with a new Streetfire aftermarket one after the original failed on it's first expedition back in the water ( the only time l've had to suffer the humiliation of being towed back in in 20 + years of different boats, fortunately my son was in his boat, just in case lol )

l believe your motor has the same ignition system as this so things to keep an eye on,

l admire your pluck but politely question your sanity lol going out that far with a donk that's between 34 and 41 yrs old AND only have one donk as well,

If it is the same ignition system something as simple as a broken dizzy belt will ruin ya day, specially in the middle of 11 mt waves that were recorded here recently,

old donks can fail anytime, specially if they've been on fresh water skiboats,

what hull is your boat?
looks like a Whiteline?

cheers

To figure out the proper pitch you need a tachometer.
They sell an item called Tiny Tach, lots of cheaper ones out there too.
Some timing lights have a tach function.
Figure out the rpm's at wide open.
Send your prop off to be redone and ask what the pitch is.
If you can run 52-5500rpm's then your prop is the right one.

Running too high a pitch can get you more speed and use a bunch more fuel.

I changed from a 17 to a 19p and got 3 more mph and about 15% more fuel usage.

The thought that the pisser will draw away cooling water is way off.
If your impeller and pump is in good shape, it will pump way more water than your motor will ever need to cool.
That's why they put in a pressure relief valve.
Just keep it small and you'll never miss the water.

Hey Tassy, I have a 50 merc blueband wreck i Pilot hed the the rubber tell tale out of him for mine , mine had one but it was rugged, a crappy nylon tale hanging out the top of the head that was threadless, doomed to fail, i tacked it but have hole in the cowl still, I might steer away from the pisser set up, I have psi, temp gauge and a big car horn under the dash feeding of the original oheat sensor, I have yet to get a auxilliary I got to smaller Chryslers. 10 n a 15 both need recoil starters overhauled but I don’t go that far out without a second donk, my 115 is perfect Im crazy about maintenance,I have seen a conversion done with a car coil, condenser and car type BP5 NGK plugs, Id like to do away with the power pack but I think you’d likely burn the pistons out eventually I have a spare CD unit they don’t take long to change in any case Ive never had a Chrysler disgrace itself other then a circuit breaker fused, if you care for them they are fine off shore, I tend to use the auxilliary when trolling for marlin on the shelf the big two strokes don’t like to idle around they oil up the plugs and stop wouldn’t be the first I’ve had to hang over the top of the donk cleaning plugs, Id like to connect the aux to the main so can steer from up front, I lost a leg 3 years ago so can’t work as fast as I used to be able to, getting new leg soon so that will help. When I’m out of Facebook jail if u have book I have my own page running for local fans of these old darlings. I spend a bit of time in book jail I am bit vocal on a few things and get into a few ding dongs with lefty’s lol

These change overs won't damage anything.
There are threads on here covering the job.

The pressure relief is at the bottom of the block under the exhaust chest.
Usually a rounded diamond shaped cover with 2 tiny screws holding it in place.
It consists of a cover, gasket, a spring and a plastic plug.
You will probably twist the tiny screws(10-24x5/8) off just picking up the wrench:)

It's supposed to open when the pressure gets too high.

Usually a few times in the salt or running through the sand and they can clog and not work.
They stopped putting them in in the late 80's ????
Probably because they just clogged anyway??

Hi Andrew, glad to hear you have a aux with you going out there,
we've had 6-7 " white fridges " as well from 10hp to 120 ( the horrible magnapower 11 lol ) but that was awhile ago ( 8- 10 yrs ) now,
we only ever used them in freshwater in Vic as the lakes were closer than Port Phillip Bay and they were on small ski boats ( Volero Darts ) as well, not the ideal bay boat by any means,

since moving to Tas 5 yrs ago the need for larger offshore boats was soon satisfied so when the donk on the V150 Nautiglass expired it was parked in the shed for awhile while we use the other boats,

When we did get the little 15 ft runabout going we realised pretty quick that it was too small for Tassie waters, unless under 15 kts,

ok in PPB in Melbourne but a tad scary here,

anyway, there is a bloke around Bathurst/ Orange who had containers of 2nd hand parts and some new ones as well,

l lost his number when l got a new phone a few yrs ago but every now and then l remember his name, when l next remember it l'll post it,

there was also quite a few part sellers on Gumtree in Vic when we were first looking for a replacement CD module, before we decided to go with the Streetfire unit, which wasn't much more than some people were asking for 35 yr old 2nd hand dodgy ones,
l've read there is no troubleshooting procedure for the CD unit anyway,

l just remembered his name,
Don Penhall no number though,
maybe a random phone call to the relevant shire office may help, he did have some sort of business around there at the time,

but if you have plenty of parts sorted...

he sent me the parts for that rotten magnapower 11 that got it going,

Yes Mag 2 was crap, I have Motorola mag 1 , my cd box is fairly new, I have a spare plus I have a 140 in pieces, I’ll stroke after her first season, few more neddies can’t hurt lol.
I am a catch n release fisho I don’t eat fish or red meat , no animals die to feed me, my passion is playing with white sharks, barley them up hope to get whites, had a 19 footer one day was bigger then boat he tried to eat my volvo stern drive, been hooked on them ever since, I love marlin fishing, switch baiting, my boat will have outriggers, the fit out will be 7nreal for her size, I estimate two more years to complete her.
Hows Tassie? We want to migrate to Tassy or NZ Id love to live in NZ, No bloody feed round here for our houses, sick of buying round bales at 135 bux a pop, we in drought no hay crops till November , Tassy is nice n green and the fishing is good, few White Sharks there Id be happy.

Yeh, those exhaust stains look crap,
we'd run a little more two stroke than normal while it was on the stand, didn't take long to turn black,

19ft jaws is a big un alright, they worry me as my older son is a commercial diver here and a rec scallop diver was taken here about three years ago,

plenty of great whites about too as there a couple of seal colonies around the corner as well as being a declared shark and ray nursery, can't try and catch them in the proclaimed area,

Between us ( 3 ) we've got a 18 ft 6 Whittley Voyager, a 23ft Huntsman and a 30ft Mariner flybridge cruiser to go outside in when chasing SBT or Striped Trumpeter, Morwong or even just King Flathead,

funny how all those boats and one more fit in MY backyard...

Tassie?
love it...
boat ramp and marina are only a block away,
big fish fishing is 30 mins at about 16 kts,

it's not as green around here on the East Coast,
a lot of mad landers don't realize that Tassie also has droughts, as is the case here now,

paddocks are brown, farm dams are empty, no paddocks with feed to rotate, sheep are looking hungry as are the horses,

yrs ago we had horses in Vic, got tired of the constant feed and agistment issues and sold them after 25 yrs,

being the first day of winter we have just had water restrictions lifted and the towns water supply is overflowing after the big wet that flooded Hobart ( 90 k's away )

Saw a Great White out of Ocean City, Md.
Chunking for tuna, setting on the back with my feet hanging off the end.
Looked to my left and saw the head of a shark, looked to the front of the boat and saw it's tail cutting a wake at the
front of the boat.
My boat is 21ft.
MONSTER!!!!
Got my feet right back into the boat.!!!
