What to know about a 2006 Glastron SX 175

I finally bought a bowrider after loving them for years. I have owned everything from empty 15' who knows what to 15' crestliners ect. I bought (made an offer, though it was for $250 less than asking so I got it pretty sure) a 2006 Glastron SX 175 with the 3.0L engine, today. It is my first inboard boat, what should I know about it when coming from 1980 and older outboards. I know the bellows and winterizing is different. But what about oil? Do I need to mix in oil to the gas? If so how do I figure out how much? Boat is in good condition all around, clean, good seats other than one small wear mark and there is a scratch in the gelcoat on the hull which looks like it is from a log. Not an issue though since it is shallow and I will be fixing it once I get the boat.

Its a 4-stroke engine. It uses straight gasoline, not 2-stroke oil pre-mix. If you didn't get the original owner's manual with the boat, you can download one for free at Mercury Marine.

Do that and print it out for future reference. It will tell you all you need to know. Follow the directions to the letter and you'll be fine. Any internet suggestions that conflict the manufacturer's recommendations are probably wrong.

Do not mix oil into the gas. Motor is like a car engine . So just check the oil on the dipstick and put gas in the tank

The engine is a Volvo but I assume I can download a manual as well for it? I tend to follow what Mercury says (the only engine I have ever had to maintain minus a Johnson that died me)

That sounds wonderful compared to what I have had to do for years. 8 years with old 2 strokes hopefully gone for good.

And what is wrong with 2 strokes?

Congrats on the new 2 you boat. I once put oil in the gas of a new lawnmower. You don't know what you don't know until you know. Asking first is a good thing.

Volvo specs the use of Synthetics for engine and gear oils. Pay particular attention to what gear oil you use, Synthetic marine G5 is the spec. I have used Royal Purple in the engine for the past decade, I will be returning to Volvo's 10 - 40 this fall. I've always used Volvo gear oil.

I had a 78 or 79 Crestliner 550 open bow, still my favorite boat and hull design. I think it actually road smoother than my Glastron SX 195. not as fast though, best was 51mph, the 195 is at least 10mph faster

Congrats, get yourself used to the three liter drone noise from the four cylinder. I would think about changing the impeller as people don't change them as they should.

Funny you mention the Crestliner I had the exact same boat as my old one just not the open bow model. It was the 1977 Crestliner Crusader 550 It was not a fast boat but I did have it out in rough water (think 3-4' swells) and it handled perfectly. I little rough but way better than most boats even today.

Skater and Jimmbo my dad still has and uses his Crestliner Crusader 550. He just turned 75 and his boat is on its 4th motor. First was 100 hp Merc 2nd was a 120hp Chrysler lasted a long time till it overheated and cracked a cylinder wall. 3rd was a 140 evinrude boat would fly with that engine , caught a ring and lost compression. Last engine installed 8 years ago 115 Evinrude

I couldn’t agree more with this one. The impellers are suggested to be changed every 50 hours. I pull mine and leave it out of the housing over the winter but still try to get a new one at the start of each season. It’s a cheap way to ensure you won’t have cooling issues

Sadly my offer was not accepted for this boat but I am thankful for the information from you all.
