You have to know where to look: serial numbers 4112637 thru 4310784 were 1975 models.

Thanks for the reply is there a way I can know for sure?
Your engine year is a bit to old to do a computer comparison search to the available online serial number look-up charts so you have to go by trusting the charts are accurate which about 99.9% of the time they seem to be right on when checking them both over...So with that mentioned I'm really confident your serial number you provided (4237776) is an 1975 year model as it falls within the serial number range.

My guess is that the original poster was not happy with the " age " of his new purchase.

You order Mercury parts with the serial number !!----Most shops will ignore parts requests with only the year.

Why, is it hard to get parts for this year?

This is a parts diagram link for your motor motor serial number range;

1150snrange.PNG

This all the years of your motor in that serial number range, from 1973 to 1977 and the motors are the same. So if you ask for, say a new cylinder block for a 1975 motor and the parts guy says he only has one for a 1973 and you may leave when 1973-1977 use the same block - 8852-5034A 3, A 1970-1973 uses block 852-5034A 3. The point is serial numbers are used to order parts for Merc outboards.

The motor is 40 years old and many parts may be listed as NLA from factory.------But many parts can be found if you do some searching.-----Or are you expecting every part to be handy and on the shelf for your motor ?

Drop the lower unit in whatever gear it is in. It is easy to change it later, if the gearcase is good. If the gearcase is bad, you can damage good parts on the motor by trying to shift it.

Inspect the wiring on the engine. It is likely bad, unless it has been replaced.

After the gearcase is off, if the motor spins, put some oil in the cylinders and rotate by hand.

Jumper the starter and take a compression test. If any cylinder is low or zero, the motor may not be economical to repair.

Post back on findings.

Tune up parts for that motor are readily available. You can get pistons, rings, gaskets etc, however, the cost of parts may not make the repair economical. You will likely need to do your own repair work as shops usually do not want to work on old motors, or do not have the experience to do so.

Ign components are real expensive, however, they rarely need replacing. Do not touch the rotor and distributor cap, unless you know exactly what you are doing. Rotors are not replaceable and break easy.

I was never expecting for every part to be handy on the shelf
just wanted to get an idea of what to expect to get my motor running again. It was running before I got it then never ran again after sitting 2 years, a lot of you may have some experience with this particular engine that really could help me navigate the way to get that done. I'm mechanically inclined I can do the work on my own which helps a lot on its own but I will take pictures and post updates on my new project.
