Yeah, if I gelcoat, I know it has to be poly. But rustoleum is cheap and it could still be poly.. Epoxy is expensive but I'll only need cloth, and then rustoleum is cheap..

I think I might get 3 sheets of the BCX which is enough to do the front half of the boat where the waves might actually pound the hull.

decisions, decisions

I guess the other question would be how long it’s going to be in the water? Just for the day, a week, an entire season? If you trailer the boat, then paint would work excellent, and would be easier to apply. Longer than a week in the water, you might consider gelcoat.....unless there are paint systems out there that can handle applications below the water line.

It will never be in the water for more than a week. I plan to do a couple canal trips per year where it might be in the water a full week

I would glass it.

But poly or epoxy is the question.. Poly I would run at least 1 layer of 1708 overtop of a layer of CSM, with the edges being taped with a CSM and bi axial cloth sandwich.

Epoxy would only get one layer of cloth, but both would be finished with paint

You would only need the 1708 on the poly. The layer of CSM under the 1708 is not really doing anything. 1708 is the CSM and biaxial cloth sandwich.

Poly is cheaper and kicks quicker, and stinks to high heaven. You need a respirator to work with it. Epoxy is stronger by itself, more expensive, and slow to kick, and doesn’t stink.

The choice is yours, they both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Have you worked with either before...I forget. Poly is fine, EEpppoooxxxyy is finer. Just kidding it's just my preference.
They both do the job quite well.

I have experience with poly, but almost none with epoxy beyond barcoat and 2 part epoxy to fix stuff

FINALLY got time and help to flip this monster over to put the bottom on. I thought it was light, and it 'isn't heavy but it's not light
