6 HP won't troll??????

I have had a lot of issues with my Evinrude, 6 HP E6REIA -1991 model motor recently, and you guys helped me out immensly. It is now starting good and idling good at a few more RPMs than I would like for a slow, slow troll. (it trolled great last season). I did all that everyone suggested that I do, but a couple questions still. If I just adjust the rPMs at the hamdle control on the motor, it will not run. it coughs, slight backfire and stalls out, then I have to partially choke it to restart her every time.

I just rebuilt and cleaned the carb. It was spotless, but I already bought the kit so I rebuilt it. First question: I did not see a welch plug anywhere. Is this possible or did I miss it somehow? (There was new one in the kit). I cannot get it to slow troll with adjusting the slow speed needle. There are two other screws on the other side of the carb that regulate the little roller for the cam and also opens or closes the throttle up deep inside the carb. 2nd question. Should I attempt to adjust either or both of these two screws at all to lower the idle RPM's???

Thank in advance! .

No welsh plug/domed expansion plug. Remove the plastic top and clean idle passages

On the diagram below from the BRP parts website #30 is the idle adjustment screw

Don't adjust the screw on the cam roller to throttle linkage, #1 unless you really have to . The U shaped plastic bit gets brittle with age and is easily broken. If it has been correctly sync'd it should not need readjusting

Thanks. I was worried that I missed the plug somehow. I removed the top and cleaned all passages very good, but they all looked absolutely like new when I opened her up.

Thank you. I will not touch the #1 screw as it trolled perfect last season and has not been touched, but niether has the #30 screw, but I will try adjusting that if necessary. I also have an idle setting at the end of my throttle0steering handle on the motor that I can adjust. Just wondered if that is doing the same thing as that #30 screw would do? When I lower the RPMs using the adjustment in the handle, the motor quits and then I have to partially choke it to start it back up again even after it has been running and all warmed up. That's why I rebuilt the carb. Hoping that will do the trick for me. I plane on trying it out on the lake tomorrow morning. Will post my results for those that want to know. Thanks again.

My 6hp is a little older and does not have the idle adjust screw on the carb. Only a knob on the end of the tiller, which is my idle speed adjustment. ( Mine is a sail boat engine therefore I have no requirement to troll)

I would expect to adjust the screw on the cab to give the actual minimum idle speed ( but also adjust the mixture screw having previously set it to the specified initial setting)

Then use the knob on the tiller as the trolling speed adjustment

You should find detailed instructions in the manual on the Boatinfo website

HELP! I rebuilt my carb on my 6 h.p. Evinrude, 1991 model E6REIA. Now gas is pouring out of the small screen (VENT???) on the side of the carburator. Why is this happening? The needle shut off valve that I installed is no good??

THANKS

Yes I did Vic. The float is new and I put it in correctly, and so was the shut off needle that attached to it as well as the seat for it. . I just took it apart again, and I put the old needle & seat back in, and that seems to have stopped the gas gushing out. from that screen. Seems like maybe I got a bad needle (or seat) in the rebuild kit. I did not attempt to start the motor yet, but the gas was coming out of the screen as I was pumping the primer ball with the motor not running. But even if I over pumped it, the needle should stop the flow of gas from coming out of the screen, correct? Is that screen a vent? An overflow of some type?
Thanks again, Vic. Also Vic, I tried to get a new carb for my motor. I found a newly rebuilt one from a 1993 6 - 8 H.P. Evinrude. Part # 435937. Picture looks the same as mine, but part # is differant than mine and my carb says "Not availabe". Just wondering if you know if the 1993 carb will fit my 1991 motor 6 hp E6REIA??

Was the little spring clip in place? You may already know it clips onto the needle and over the float arm..

The float chamber has to be vented . If it overfills fuel will come out somewhere. and I guess that screen is where it comes out .
You should not be able to overfill the carb by pumping with the ball. Once it is full the ball will become firm ( just a bit spongy perhaps if there is any air trapped in it)and no more fuel will pass the float valve ( I assume you wont put it on the floor and jump on it  )

I does seem as if the new valve and / or float is defective but if now seems OK and runs OK with the old one no problems.

I don't know if a 1993 carb will fit.

BTW the little clip is there because the soft tip needles tend to stick on the valve seat. The clip pulls it off when the float drops. If the needle were to stick you'd get no fuel through , rather than it overflowing.

Thanks for all of your help Vic. I got it all together, did not start it up yet (had to get a colonoscopy this morning) Anyway, lost all of my gas out of the bowl over night. Took carb off and disassembled again to see what is leaking now. I found a very thin hairline crack at one of the screw holes in the float bowl. Actually found it with a magnifying glass tonight. Had a problem finding a new bowl for it, but I did find one on E-bay. Should be in within 3-5 days. I will get her running one of these days. LOL Will post here when I do! Thanks again.

NOTE: I probably laid into the screws too tight huh? I will just snug them on the new bowl when I get it & only tighten them more if I need to so it will not leak thru the gasket.
