ok cool, i have been trying that for about 40 minutes at a time...but at the last start up i noticed it started in gear ..it ran at a slow idle speed but the shift was not in gear at all ..that worried me so i turned it off....now after 5 mins i try to turn on and it doesnt crank at all when turning the key...was i wrong for turning it off when like that ?

When the motor is stopped it goes into forward gear.------A spring put it into forward.----When lower unit is in good condition it shift out of forward with ONE TURN of the flywheel.-----------Often the prop will turn with control in neutral.------Use a stick to check.-----I have done it many times with the toe of a work boot !----Check the throttle safety switch on the motor block.----It has and only needs one white wire.

with proper water pressure, it will idle until you either run out of fuel or you carbon up your plugs.

As Danforth stated, you can do it until you run out of fuel. However, the most important thing is to make sure that you are pushing enough water through the muffs. Water should be spilling out the sides of the muffs and, assuming this is a modern motor, you should see a strong stream of water from the telltale hose.

It is right there beside( right side of ) the fuse holder !!----The motor will crank if it is in gear.----It is always in forward when motor is stopped as I clearly stated !-----It is supposed to shift to neutral after just ONE TURN of the flywheel.-----You need to now trouble shoot the shifting system.-----The shift system works once motor is turning to provide oil pressure.-----That oil pressure is controlled by the neutral and reverse solenoids.------And in my opinion this is an elegantly simple system.----Of course I know how it works and can tear one apart and re-assemble without the manual.

Sorry you have to do the trouble shooting !----Is there any oil in the lower unit ?----It takes about 30 ounces of type C ( for electric shift ) that would be step #1.----Next find the wires green and blue that go into the lower unit.-----There are rubber boots on those wires.---Report when you find them.

Am I wrong or does it look as if the stator may also has issues from the black ooze on the top of the intake.
