My other thread kind of got off the rails and the topic changed so I am starting this new thread.

Carb is freshly rebuilt (by me). Fuel pump is brand new. Spark plugs are brand new. The issue I had the last time I took the boat out is it ran perfect in all throttle ranges EXCEPT wide open. It would run up to about 80% throttle fine and if I mashed the throttle to get the accelerator pump to push fuel it would accelerate to WOT for about 5-10 seconds but then it would completely fall on its face. Same if I just gradually increased to WOT it would just fall on its face eventually. If I held it at 80% throttle it was completely happy and ran with no problem. I pulled a couple spark plugs to check if I was maybe rich or lean but they looked normal, not too sooty and no white deposits.

So last night I had it up on the trailer running on the hose for the first time since I had the issue at the lake. I started it up and noticed I had to crank it a little more than usual but it eventually started up. After the choke opened all the way I increased throttle a couple times to see if i could get it to replicate the issue. It ran normally. I got up to go back and check the engine and as I walked back to it the engine started chugging like it was way too rich then it stumbled and died. Then I noticed that fuel was still gurgling and pouring into the intake through the carb for at least a minute after shutdown. I suspect the float level is set incorrectly or the needle is stuck down as that is the only thing I can think of that would cause this issue. Has anyone else had something like this happen before? Is there any other troubleshooting steps I can take?

You may have a failed diaphragm in the fuel pump... Given the original symptoms, that's what I'd be checking first..

What is the engine serial number? Merc has been using the 4.3 since 1984, and there's been about 6 different variations of it in that time.

New fuel pumps can fail, especially if they're cheap chinesium...

You said fuel pouring into the carb. There should be a length of tubing from the base of the fuel pump to a barb on the top of the carb. When the pump fails, fuel can be pushed up the tube and into the carb. It's a deliberate fail mode. Stops the pump filling the sump with petrol...

Unfortunately all the aftermarket ones are. The only way to get quality is to pay a bit more. And as much as I loathe the idea, buy genuine in this case.

Yeah I have a really hard time believing that even the Chinese can mess up a diaphram fuel pump that has literally one moving part... I know alot of you old guys harp on not getting chinesium parts but if its something as simple as this I do not see any issue. I have gotten hundreds of chinesium parts from rockauto and have yet to have an issue. I seriously doubt the fuel pump is my issue. I ran it with that hose that goes up to the carb off and no fuel came out at any point and it never had any issue feeding fuel. I am rather certain my issue is somewhere inside the carb.
