Hey guys ive got a bad stator on my 77 85hp Evinrude. I couldn't find one in good shape for a reasonable price thats an exact fit but i did find a new old stock v6 stator for a twin power pack v6 of the same era.

I read an old thread on here saying you can use the v6 stator and just cap off the extra charge wires for the second power pack.

Is this a safe thing to do ? Should i just splice them together and run to my single power pack like my factory stator did?

My concern is putting all that load on a single charge coil and pulling too much current from it.

I cannot afford the correct stator. Cheapest i could find was $250 and no new old stock anywhere. The v6 unit is only $65.

If in Canada----evinrudeparts.ca-----Might offer help finding parts.

I checked that site and they want $480US for a stator. I simply cant afford to put that kind of money into the boat right now.

Splice them together and youd be messing with the voltages over the AC current cycle.
Have you got the link to the old thread?

this is the old thread where i got the idea. The guy said he only used one of the charge coils for his application.

I was looking at another stator i have laying around and the charge coils are wired in series then 2 leads connect to the single power pack. Are there magnets around the entire internal circumference of the flywheel? If its only a few magnets then the coils would generate peak voltage out of phase with each other right?

What are the ohm readings on your 85 HP stator?

The stator that's on the engine reads 800 ohms from the brown to brown/yellow wire. However when I crank it I'm getting 0 volts on the dva meter with the brown and brown/yellow leads disconnected from the power pack.

The rectifier seems to be good all the diodes tested .440v drop or more with my meter set to diode check.

Not around all but often there are many. You would need to know polarity of each of those magnets too.
It worked for that guy in the thread so id buy the cheap one myself before anyone else did and id just cap off the ends like he did as i think adding them together could cause a lot of issues including doubling the voltage to the powerpack, boom

I ended up ordering the new old stock 1977 v6 stator for $65 compared to a new old stock v4 stator for $385. I guess they aren't in high demand like the v4 stators. Part number 581867 in case anyone else wants to try this lol.

Someone wrote," rapair 6-13" on the bottom of the old stator. Does anyone know what rapair means?

Well it runs with the v6 stator. I had it going for about 10 minutes on muffs. Spark seems to be very strong.

I'm Gonna try to test it on water soon.

Alright boys,

I tested it on the river a few days ago but to my dismay its still not running right.
The issue i've got now is that it wont rev about 3700rpm. If i go wide open throttle it will climb to 3700 then start misfiring. If i back off a little on the throttle it will hold at 3700 without misfiring.

I took it home and checked the plugs for clues. cylinder 1, 2, and 3 all looked about the same but cylinder 4 was much cleaner than the rest.

Does this sound like a bad power pack? It seems like if the new stator was the problem it would be affecting all cylinders equally not just cylinder 4. All 4 coils were replaced this year.

That site has nothing of use to me.

The v6 stator is putting 240V to the power pack

Coils 1,2, and 3 are getting 190v on their primary side wires. Coil 4 was only getting 170v at cranking speed. This sounds like power pack problems right ? The lower output corresponds to the plug that's cleaner which means the misfire is there.
