That said, if you don't have a mercathode and don't plug it into shore power then its not going to help much

With all the other zincs on the motor/od, I don't know if it is really necessary. Perhaps u should ask former owner why they removed it. I have seen several ODs that had and a number that didn't.Want to install anode on sterndrive over the hydraulic manifold, seems to have a plastic cover over it with a wire attached to it do i remove this first?
and discard, ( alpha one Gen 1) 5.7 Mercruiser.
