Have a 1972 johnson 3cyl 75hp outboard with what appears to be two "shock absorbers" (look like pn:0385532) mounted to a pivot arm with a grese fitting under the motor. No signs of the typical lift assist cylinder (pumpjack) that everyone is complaining about anywhere.

Are these just shock absorbers or should they be providing some form of lift/lower assist?

This thing is heavy as all getout to lift and downright scary to lower due to the weight.

Perhaps post the model #----I doubt there was a 75 HP in 1972 model year.

According to my chart 1975 is the earliest they made a 75 hp. They show a shock abs and spring for the 20 inch model but different part number than you list. 2 per unit. Should help going down not sure on the up. They do sell an aftermarket lever that you put on the engine cover to help lift it up. Had one for my 90 HP back in the day but got tired of that and installed a trim and tilt.

Here is the correct part number for a 1974 70hp and while expensive they are available. The other ones I sent you were not available.

Ouch.. looks like i need to save for a trim and tilt kit.. if these only help on the way down I might as well just leave them busted.

Here is some used ones on eBay. $70 plus shipping. Not sure if those help when raising.

Thank you kindly. I'll reach out to the seller and ask about their experience with how they functioned
