1995 Evinrude E90TLEO charging

Hello,
I have a 1995 E90TLEO Evinrude and have a question about the output charging volts.

I just got back from a remote Canadian fishing trip. While on the lake I noticed my analog volt meter was only reading 12 volts while running about 5000 RPM. I also noticed a clicking sound or what I thought was a clicking sound from the cowl of the motor. At that RPM it's hard to hear much...

So the next day running it I noticed that the analog volt meter gauge was creeping up above 12v and my humminbird graph was showing 12.2 to 12.5 volts.

I thought I remembered seeing nearly 13 volts on the gauge in the past and automotive systems charging at 13v or above.

Is this normal voltage? I know per my factory service manual it shows the voltage should be 12-12.4 at 5350 RPM minimum.

I would just like some advice from those with more experience than I with these motors.. Hopefully I was concerned over nothing.

Thank you racerone, I'll start with the diagnostics. Do you know off hand what the stator should be putting out volt ac wise? I don't recall seeing it in the FSM.

Obviously you have charging issues. Remember, 12.7 or .8 is a full battery... its probably a rectifier issue.

You have a lead acid battery I presume.

saltchuckmatt, yes. A Walley world marine battery 2 months old.

Did a little testing with the ohmmeter.
Stator is reading 1.0 to 0.9 ohms
Per the factory manual my motor should have a 9 amp stator and that reading should be 0.7- 0.05 ohms. I don't know if that is significant or not.

Both stator leads read 400 plus on the check for grounding.

The rectifier/regulator showed high/low readings on all wires checking the reverse polarity.

Other than the questionable stator numbers, is there any thing else to check that I am missing?

Replace the stator.
So did I interpret the above spec wrong in the .07 to 0.05?
Should that be .07 +/- 0.05?

Also is the reason you say replace the stator because of the higher resistance than factory spec. causing the charging issue?

My apologies if my questions seem dumb.

The stator to ground should read INFINITY.-----400 ohm indicates a short to ground.----Replace stator.

when testing for grounds make certain all leads are disconnected from anything external

Crosbyman, thank you. I did do that.

I guess I was a little confused about what was a high reading, being infinity or OL vs a low reading checking a grounded condition. The FSM isn't clear on that and doesn't give any specs in regards to that.

I ordered the stator as well as the rectifier/regulator today. I went with CDI over OEM. I hope that was a wise choice.

infinity is what your meter displays when probes do not touch..... anything else is resistance of varying values.

some meter autorange hold style analog .needle meters must be set on the proper R value range

So I changed the stator as well as the rectifier/regulator. Thought I was getting CDI products only to receive Sierra parts. I did not know that CDI had been bought out.

Anyway, changed those out and I am still getting 12.2 v at 1,000 RPM. 12.4 to 12.5 at 2,000 RPM.

Per the FSM in the following picture. It shows a no load current spec of 12 to 12.4v. Is that right, if so that would mean that I am charging in spec correct?

It could take several hours of 3500 rpms to recharge a run down boat battery.
I would recharge it on a wall charger. Then install it back in the boat.

cyclops222, I will do that. I think I will add a house battery for my sonar and miscellaneous accessories. Just need to decide to wire it parallel and figure out how to isolate it. Or just to wire it separate.

Buy a big... Master Battery Switch......It has #1..#2..Both..Off Positions. Install a standard sized car battery. Size 24 or 31.
Interstate was running a factory sale at a local store of theirs. $124 ? Marine Terminals on both posts. Has car and threaded posts. Done Battery is 1 month old and fully charged. :)(y)

They also have 27 series and interstate batteries now are junk. Take your meter in and test them new....their junk.

Much better lead acid batteries out there ...I'm running American made Deca batteries, new lead not recycled.
