    Tillotson TC-5E float needle valve

I have a 1974 Chrysler 135hp with two Tillotson RC-5E carbs. The float needle valve is all metal and new parts also look like all metal. No rubber/viton tip. Is this correct? Is there a rubber/viton seal inside the carb body? Just double checking since most float needles have to seal completely.

Best 2 stroke oil for Chrysler / Force outboards

I hear lots on conflicting information on 2 stroke oil. Chrysler/Force owners are a "frugal", some call it "cheap" group. So why spend more on oil than we need to. We also know that we want our old outboards to last. Otherwise we will have to anti-up really big bucks for another brand of...

Are Chrysler motors junk and to be avoided?

I thought it might be interesting to start a discussion on this topic. I run through my own pros and cons on the motor I have own for the last 6 years. My Chrysler 1974 135hp was in fairly good condition when I got it. Decent compression 137-140 which has stayed the same. The lower leg was...

Most common problems with 4 cyl / 3cyl chrysler outboards

Hello, I would like my 1974 Chrysler outboard to last. It seems like one of the biggest challengs is finding parts. So I would like to plan ahead and start looking for various parts that are known to be needed. Please post things on the 4 cylinder and 3 cylinder (since they share many things...

Do 1 piece lower ends fit older motors that came with the 2 piece

Will the 1 piece lower ends fit the outboards that came with the 2 piece lower ends? I have a 1974 135hp Chrysler outboard. I would like to buy a parts motor. I have heard the 1 piece lower end is much better.

Best gasoline octane for old Chrysler Outboards

This is likely a no brainer but here goes. RECreational gas seems to be best for these old motors primarily because it's non-ethonol. Where I live REC gas octane rating is 90. My Clymer manual says you can run 87 in an old Chrysler. Of course the 87 around here is 10% ethanol so I have some...

Is this normal wear on a distributor belt?

I know replacing this belt is a bear. I also know that if it break out on the water that will be bad and maybe even a vacation killer. So should I replace this belt considering what bear it can be to pull a flywheel that has likely never been removed?

Will this prop bearing carrier break apart if removed?

I have a 1974 135hp that runs ok. I know it's impossible to say how long it will run but the one area on the motor that seems bad is the prop bearing carrier. Is this normal looking corrosion? If I try to replace it is it likely to break apart? It seems brittle and there is probably corrosion...

    Tachometer for 1974 135hp

The wiring diagram shows the white tachometer wire comes from the CDI box. So can I use a basic automotive tachometer since they normally just connect to the negative terminal on the coil?

    Fouling spark plugs

My engine fouls plugs no matter what I do. Are these engines known for fouling plugs? Is there something I can do? Do the ignition boxes get week? 1974 Chrysler 135 hp 135 psi compression. Plugs are correct, timing is correct, new coil, points, plugs and wires. Running recreational fuel at 50-1...

Does this amount of water in my gear oil seem like something to worry about or normal? I replaced the oil in April 2021.

Will a 1977 135hp Chrysler outboard work as a parts motor for my 1974

Looks like the lower end is different. What else is different between a 1977 and 1974 Chrysler 135hp?

Why would the electrode on a spark plug get smashed

I installed conventional plugs on a 1974 135hp Chrysler and while running at 3/4 throttle for about 10 minutes the motor stopped running well. I pulled the plugs and found the #3 plug electrode was smashed. No debris in the cylinder and 130psi compression just like the other 3 cylinders. Any...

Aftermarket epoxy coil that works so far

It's always good to find aftermarket parts since originals are hard to find and expensive. I got this epoxy filled coil on ebay for $23.75. The title said "Blaster Ignition Blaster SS Coil High Voltage -40,000V Male E-Core Square Epoxy" So far it is working just fine. I bought 2 just in case. It...

How long have you owned a Chrysler Outboard and what has been your experience

I thought this may or may not be an interesting subject. I have owned my 1974 Chrysler 135hp for about 2 1/2 years. So far the best advise I have gotten is don't mess with it just run it. Strong points: light weight and simple design compared to other outboards. It reminds me of owning an old...

Little known salt water impeller housing

I recently installed what is a called a Heavy Duty Water Pump Kit, F5H074 on my 1974 Chrysler 135hp outboard. The standard kit is a FK1033-1. The Heavy Duty housing is 2 parts instead of one and made out of some kind of alloy that looks like a combination of copper and stainless steel. The...

hard starting 1974 135hp on the water

Engine starts very well when I launch the boat. It only takes 3-5 seconds of cranking and then it starts right up. Then it will sit and idle for 5 minutes no problem. It's doesn't even cough. I motor out to the fishing spot, usually hitting 3/4 quarter throttle with no hesitation or problems...

Extra parts got my 1974 135hp back on the water

I just wanted to share some recent issues from a fishing trip. 2 times the engine died and would not start out on the water. Fortunately I have a 9.9 kicker motor and it got us home. The kicker cost me about $800 total so that was cheap insurance. Well worth it for peace of mind with a 47 year...

Starts off good then eventually dies

1974 Chrysler 135hp, has run good before, now it starts very well, idles very well for about 10 min, yesterday ran the engine up to about 3\4 throttle and it ran well for about 30 min then it seemed to miss a little for 5 min as we headed back to the dock, then it slowly died, started up with a...
