Added the final layer(s) of wood. The end that attaches to the bow is tapered. Stood my plywood of on end. Raised the table saw blade as high as possible and got a great angled cut.

Feb 26 2023 A little more progress. Had to build up the edges around the anchor chain area. Thickened epoxy an small piece of glass laid up with a plastic backer made it solid.

1988 mercruiser alpha 1 gen 1 steering issues

I was told rebuild kits are out there.. old corvette and mustangs used these power steering units. Sooooo i looked on my google machine and have found some information. Im not there yet on my rebuild but my findings say yes you can replace seals and clean it up. Better than spending the bucks on...

More progress. Trimmed away the excess glass… a good sanding all around (my favorite part 😂). Set wiring in tube before putting second layer in….. laid in second layer of ply… set it with thickened epoxy. Clamped in for the night… Boom. Another step completed.

Happy new year to all. update 1-7-23 the holidays came and went. Made a bit of progress on the bow pulpit. Decided to beef up the anchor roller area and fill in all gaps around the first layer of wood with thickened epoxy. Still have to cut off excess fiberglass. I milled out the area for the...

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

You could try dissemble the steering components. Clean them up and inspect as you go. Work from the cable in. Make sure the steering cable is free before you start to mess the steering components. Many you tube vids out there. Good luck

Looking good! Did you roll on gel coat and tip it with a brush? also looking at your sides it looks like you had some patch work. Will you be spraying gelcoat on the sides?

Thanks! Agreed… I just wasn’t keeping track of the kick off time. Things were getting hardened up before I had a chance to make it smooth.. oh well. I’m good at sanding/grinding😂 I’ll be more careful with the second layer.

Great idea… not sure it’s worth the building of the jig for one scarf joint. But I did watch several videos on the process. Always learning here.

Poly or epoxy, not sure what to go with?

For what it’s worth, if you‘re going to use epoxy resin you need to use 1700 fiberglass not 1708 CSM. CSM is chopped strand mat that needs the styrene from polyester resin to help bind the strands. Ask me how I know?? 🤣 I was set straight by the folks on here. Very knowledgeable people they are...

Yes the language thingy has been challenging but I’m getting the hang of it. All plywood was soaked 3 times both flat and edges. It’s crazy how much does soak in. First layer of ply clamped in…. Lotsa eeeeeepoxy used. Like how it turned out. Kinda like building a cake.😂 next challenge is to get...

Thanks guys! All great ideas. I’ll do some experimenting before doing the first full layer. kcassels…..the pics of the transom are the before I sanded the crap out of them. its all smooth now. Question- Why do I wet out and let dry? Shouldn’t the next layer go over an abraded surface?

Update 12-5 completed initial tabbing in transom. Hoping for another warm day to get the first complete layer of 1700 over the transom. Still looking for suggestions regarding the compound corners and how to get the glass mat to sit well on these areas. Most transom replacements I see are all...
