    There could be some crud build up in the bell housing in the area the shift slide is at that is keeping the cable from traveling further. You have to pull the drive off to check it.

    Here are a couple of other ways to know your gear ratio. The universal joint splined yoke will have a letter stamped on the side of it, which indicates the ratio, see chart below.

    I think that big nut that is loose is either 1" or 1-1/8" but not positive. You can also use a big adjustable wrench with smooth jaws to hold back with, as you crack that brass nut loose. I agree with the line wrench for the brass nut, best tool for the job, I think that one is 5/8"

    It would work, and then engine would run fine with it inline, but they are not allowed in an enclosed engine compartment.
