Are surge brakes always a PIA?

I always type it as PIA and say it as "PITA"....

I was thinking that's where I'd store my fenders. My boat doesn't have a lot of storage...seems like a lot less than any other boat I've used. I have under the small bow seats, the two back-to-back seats, the ski locker, and a little room under the transom seats between the battery box and fuel...

Thanks! That's kind of what I was thinking with the foam too. I was a little worried I'd go through the time and expense of fixing everything just to damage something with the new foam.

Thanks! The only use I really have for the ski locker would be for storage of something...I don't know what...since it'll just get wet all of the time from swimming. I'm definitely not going to be pulling skiers, so I can't think of an actual "need" for it.

Thanks...I'm glad you got a laugh from it! That was my intention...I'm trying to stay optimistic about this boat and project. It was an unexpected gift from my wife and it was a super spur of the moment purchase without any real thought and no inspection. I've wanted a boat my entire life, and...

If i find the foam to start being OK, can I stop removing it and just add new to replace what I've removed? I apologize...I'm sure this has been answered a thousand times in other posts....is there a "best practice" when pouring in the new foam to get the best fill? Do I put the new deck on...

More than you know! Thank you! Since I have most of the decking out anyway, and I have those two bad spots in my foam and partially filled chambers...and depending on how much it'll end up needing, I might just replace the foam... So, the floatation foam is just under the floor decking...

This picture shows the two wet spots I found. They're in the exact same spot on both sides, My guess is this is where the manufacturer poured the foam into the voids, and the seal went bad on the plug they filled in the hole with. Also, the WTF circle is showing partially filled voids at the...

I didn't get to the drill test or core sample yet. It was late when I got a chance to go out to look at it. I had a piece of tubing that I jabbed into the foam to see what I could see, and it didn't seem like it went all the way down to the hull...what little bit there was, was dry though (i...

Thanks! I checked the stringer going up the center and the rear cross stringer by hitting a screwdriver with a hammer into it in a few places and they were good and solid...now that I'm leaning more about these restos and checks to do, I'll drill them in a few other spots to check the shavings...

    Boat weight capacity plate

I wouldn't go by seat count...my boat has enough seats for 9-10 people, but the plate clearly states it has a 5 person capacity. Also, don't go by person count, you should always go by the weight capacity (don't forget to include the weight of any extra items you bring on board). I've seen a lot...

Holy cow, dude! I just looked through your thread on your transom restoration. Yikes! Knock on wood, mine has been "good" so far.

I'm taking a little of your advice with the seats...I just decided to pull 'em and get new ones.

Thanks! I know about this era of boats, I've read about ThunderCraft in particular, they went completely belly up the year after this boat was built. Same with the jet ski I own. It's a Polaris Freedom, a year or two later than the one I have, Polaris stopped production on PWCs. But, I still...

Why so much on the hull and interior? My hull is actually in excellent condition for this boats age. Same for the interior (except for the main seats and transom seat bottoms). Even the carpet was still in good condition, and surprisingly barely faded from the original color. I'm going to...

I pulled all of the flooring carpet out from transom to bow, and the only rotted spot was the port side of the ski locker. Transom, surprisingly is solid. I cut out a section of the floor 12" behind the rot to in front of the seat mounts (I decided to just replace the seats), and all the way...

Ha, I appreciate your replies! I am for sure handy. I’m currently rehabbing houses 4 & 5. Plus I’m incredibly mechanically inclined and my oldest son is a certified mechanic (albeit diesel, but still). This isn’t going to be a full overhaul. It’s a starter boat to play with for a few seasons as...

Hey all, I've been running all kinds of boats for the better part of my life and I already own a PWC, but just got my first boat. It's a 1990 ThunderCraft 1560 SE. I got it super cheap. It needs a little work, all of which I'm more than capable of doing. The biggest issue that I see, is the deck...
