1974 Sea Ray SRV 240 Weekender - complete rebuild, refit, and who knows what else...

Mentioned this in my other rebuild thread (that one is getting "close" to completion - waiting for some parts, etc...) that I bought another "project". Shortly after I got going on that rebuild (a 1969 SRV 185) in the fall, I already started thinking about looking for a bigger boat for my next...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

A couple of pics of my progress from a few days ago. Gimbal assembly attached: How it's looking from the inside: Wiring is pretty much ready for the engine, electric fuel pump plumbed and wired, just need to install throttle/shift lever and cables (as well as building that part of the...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

I have the gimbal assembly ready to install on the boat - installed new bellows, bearing, seals last night. Those bellows are no fun to install... I had ordered the new parts back in the fall, shortly after I got the boat, but realized yesterday that I should probably have some of the proper...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Haven't had much time in the past week to do much on the boat - had to work on the weekend, fuel pump died in the car one day, had to get towed home, fix the car, fun stuff like that... But, my retired dad has been cleaning up the trailer under the boat and has it looking pretty good! Part of...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

The original woodgrain/formica gauge panel was looking a bit tired, so I decided to make up a new one - using a scrap piece of plexiglass I had laying around (hey - the price was right). Used the original panel as a template to cut the plexi. Then placed the panel in place in the boat to figure...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Got the railing re-installed last night: Now that the hardware is back on the bow of the boat, I can crawl in there and start working on the wiring and then get the gas tank back in...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Pulled out the teak trim for the dash, and took a closer look at it - seems that some brilliant individual had stained it with some dark brown stain (that was partly peeling), and had managed to get the stain on the "SRV185" logo as well. So... I sanded down all of the teak, and then refinished...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Thanks. I hope it looks good when I'm done - it won't be perfect, but it will be a whole lot better than when I got it. Emblems ready to be re-installed: The port side stainless vent was missing the middle louver - my dad made up a replacement out of some scrap stainless he had laying...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Got the second coat of blue done on Wednesday. Looks good enough for me! Ended up working late Thursday and Friday, so didn't get anything done on the boat - but the paint needs time to cure anyway. This morning, started getting some of the exterior hardware cleaned up, ready to be...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Thanks for that - reminded me of the technique I saw used in a sign shop many years ago to paint backgrounds of billboards (I was their sign installer for a while). So... I decided to try it yesterday for the second coat of white (I had already done the first coat using the roll & tip method -...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Haven't had much time to work on the boat during the week, but last weekend got the top of the boat (above the rub rail) almost ready for paint - holes filled, sanded, etc. Yesterday, got home early from work, finished up the prep, primed the inside (dash, sides, etc). I'll be using Interlux...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

More progress yesterday and today... Yesterday morning, cut a piece of plywood to create a bulkhead to separate the engine compartment. The cutting was tricky, getting the thing to actually pop into place was even trickier! Amazingly, it fit on the first try. Got it tabbed in on the aft side...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

More progress today... First of all, a shot of the boat as it sits today. On the outside, not much change from when I got it, but I sure have gotten to know what's inside pretty well! From yesterday, cutting the last pieces of cloth for the stringers. Got them all in place once I got my new...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

A bit more progress today... Got the new bulkheads in place. Did a bit of glassing, but ran out of resin. Time to go buy another 5 gallon bucket of it I guess...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Got the stringers cut, trimmed, bedded in place today. Used a PB mix to bed them to the hull. The "bulkheads" in the pic are just pieces of 2x3 I put in there temporarily to hold the stringers vertical and in place until the resin sets. Tabbed the inner edges with strips of glass, then worked...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Did some more grinding this morning, and then a lot of vacuuming. This is the result: A bit more cleanup, and then I start measuring new stringers. Gotta admit, it's a good feeling seeing that all of the old questionable stuff is GONE. Now I just start building a new boat inside the old shell.

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

As promised, I got started on the stringer/floor work today. Earlier, I replaced the transom - and had only removed the rear foot or so of the stringers. This boat also had these side "pods" on each side (advertised back in 1969 as a place to put your water skis, other junks so it doesn't roll...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Haven't had a whole pile of time to work on it in the past couple of weeks, but we did manage to lengthen the trailer frame 32" to provide more support for the bunks. Need to get the new bunks in before I cut out more of the stringers. Meanwhile, the outside of the transom is looking MUCH...

1969 Sea Ray Rebuild (and mods) [SPLASHED Sept 2017]

Sure feels good getting something done! Going to leave the clamps and other supports in place until tomorrow. Will start glassing it in tomorrow morning... For the drain, decided to try something different. Glued in a couple inches of 1/2" PEX leading to the existing drain plug, then embedded...
