While we're on the subject...Johnson fat 50s

Can any of you old hands out there tell me how to start a 59 Johnson fat fifty super seahorse off the rope? I don't have an ignition key for the switch. How do I proceed?? Don't want to spend any money here, just get it cranked up so I can be sure the fuel system works and adjust the...

    Where is ICEMAN??

    Hey all,
Just acquired a 59 Johnson and was reading old posts from this board. A fellow named ICEMAN replied in March, 2002, and said he had a service manual. Need to contact him...anyone know how?

    Duraglas boats

Can anyone tell me about Dura-Glas boats made in Monticello, Arkansas. I'm about to acquire a 14 foot, model F-1044 and know nothing about them. Boat is sound, but pretty stripped. May be up for grabs soon, or on its way to the dump.

Steering link: Main engine & Kicker

Just the other day I saw a link on one of my boat sites for the link arm that connects your main outboard to your kicker, so you can steer with the wheel and not the tiller arm on the kicker. Anyone know the name of that product, or the web link?

    sierra parts

My favorite boat/marina guy is retiring and shutting the doors soon. That means I will need a reliable source for reasonably priced Sierra aftermarket parts such as coils, points, etc. Our NAPA stores here are a joke so they aren't an option. Can anyone recommend a good dealer that knows their...

    Lower unit mysteries

I need some help/answers about a lower unit I recently acquired. It's off a 79 Merc 50 hp. Was hoping it would replace the LU on my 73 Merc 500, but am unsure. The round thing (bushing?) that surrounds the base of the shift shaft is different, it's flat with two grooves on the 79 LU...different...

    stuck prop

How do you get a stuck prop off the shaft without tearing up either one? I got the nut and ring off the shaft, but the prop won't budge? Any ideas? All input appreciated. This is on a 79 50 hp Merc lower unit. Thanks.

    tach, WOT and prop

Finally got the tiny tach installed on my Merc 500. Took the boat out today and was able to make 4830 to 4880 rpms at WOT, cruising along at 23 mph. Just me (275 lbs.), 4 gallons of gas, and a 51 OMC 5 hp kicker (50 lbs.) motor in the boat...not much of a load. The boat is a 72 Ebbtide 15 foot...

    neutral safety switch, OR

    Hey all,
I pulled the lower unit and replaced the water pump on my 74 Merc 500 50 hp outboard. Checked it today with muffs and have a good telltale stream, but the engine will start in gear. Neutral safety switch? Coincidence? I know the lower unit, shift shaft is right cause i have all...

    seat arrangement

    Hey all,
Love this board and need some opinions. I want/need to pull the two old lounge seats in my 15 ft runabout with walk-thru windshield. I'm fine with the two forward seats (way up front), but don't know whether I should leave passengers lounge seat and replace driver's lounge seat...

    Sea King parts

    Hey guys,
This is getting addictive. Just picked up another OMC 5 hp from about 51-54, a Gale (Sea King, model no. 15GG9015, serial no. 422046). Pretty common and in good shape. Getting it ready to run again. Can anyone tell me where to get parts to rebuild the recoil spring/pull start...

    Merc 500 lower unit

    Okay guys,
Got good feedback on the cost of having my lower unit re-sealed (water in lube/oil). Next question is, can this be done yourself? I'm pretty mechanical...any special tools required? Is this too much of a PIA? Advice appreciated.

Pressure test, lower unit seals estimate

    Okay guys,
My mid-70's Merc 500 50 hp 4 cyl has vanilla milkshake lower unit oil...was hoping new gaskets on vent and fill holes would do...but NO WAY. So, how much can I expect to pay for a pressure test and to replace the seals? Need a price range before I take it to my boat guy. I have a...

    fat boys afloat

    Okay guys and gals,
Here's a big ole boy (BOB) question for you, and I'm serious. I stand about 6'4 and push the scales to about 265. I can't find a ladder that is easy for me to get back in the boat, a 15 foot bowrider fish/ski. So how do you other BOBs do it? Is there a simply way to...

    safe tubing

    Hey guys,
What's the safest route for pulling little guys (less than 12) in a tube/raft...tie the boat rope to the tube, or have them hold the rope? As an old/grey skier, I think they should hold the rope so they can just let go whenever they are ready and still have the tube with them...

    Motor release

    Hello all,
I have a mid-70's Merc 500 50 hp 4cyl outboard on an 15 foot Ebbtide fiberglass fish and ski boat. Great combination. tuning a Buccaneer

    Hey guys,
Not too long ago, I purchased an old Gale 5.5 hp Buccaneer (1950-1954) and rebuilt the magneto with new coils, points, condensers. Also reset the carb float and got it running pretty good. Plan to use it as a get home motor on my family fish/ski boat that we take to area lakes...

    Tiny tach question

Got my tiny tach today. Hooked it up with red wire wrapped around top spark plug wire on my 4 cyl Merc 500 50 hp...tach read four digits, first two were 57. Now my manual says the Merc idles at 550 to 600 rpm. The tiny tach is for two cylinder engines. Do I need to divide its readings by 2 or 4...
