    Carburetor clean versus carburetor rebuild

I usually go with a real good cleaning versus just assuming I need a rebuild. Tear them down, remove any plastic/rubber parts, soak in a can of carb cleaner, the hit it with compressed air. Like tphoyt mentioned check the tiny holes in the jets and the like to make sure you got any gunk out. I...

    1996 mercury 60hp bigfoot

If all the cylinders are the same at 115, I think you will be alright. A lot depends on exactly how "old" the motor is...but around the 120 mark would be acceptable for an older motor...

    Bought boat with wrong title

Well if the VIN on the title doesn't match the VIN on the boat when you find it, my guess would be one of two things. 1. the person you bought it from, got it from another person who gave them the wrong title and he just registered it with that title at the DMV and never checked; or 2. He gave...

    2004 Mercury 4 stroke, 50 hp, EFI won't accelerate.

Kinda sounds like a fuel issue for sure. I believe there is a second fuel filter near the fuel pump on that motor, right? Did you check that one or replace it too?

    letting in water around motor

Sounds like a torn or disconnected bellows to me too....easy to look for and see when you have the boat out of the water. definitely want to fix it before it causes a real issue for you.

    Battery connections

I know that here in upstate NY I pull the batteries out every winter before I wrap the boat and keep them inside on a trickle charger all winter. If not, they can freeze and/or explode and come spring I'd have two junk batteries....

    Gear lube reservoir

It's not any different really. It is move a visual reference on how the level of lube in lower is. It also has a one way valve that would release any air bubbles in lower that may have occurred during filling when it heats up. Some folks set an alarm with the reservoir that alerts them if the...

    Burned boat and insurance offer

I think it is definitely worth chatting with an attorney about. The insurance company is always going to try and come in with a low ball offer to start things off...and often time people just take it and go on their way. Having an attorney come back with a list of your own comps and explanation...

Alpha One Gen 1 Outdrive Re-Install Issue

I agree with Bondo to make sure alignment was done prior to installing. Are both the lower unit and the control set in forward gear? If so, while trying to get it installed the last few inches, try carefully turning the prop a little bit in a clockwise direction. That will turn the splines on...

Mariner doesn’t go into forward or reverse.

I would start by pulling the lower drive. See if you can shift it on the lower unit into forward and reverse and see if the prop still spins freely.... Can hope that the shifter didn't get aligned properly if it was recently taken apart for an impeller or something...otherwise the gears may be...

    Smartcraft gauge questions

So...when looking at these kits, I see that there is the gauge (tach), the tach harness, and also a CAN or data harness (the blue one). Do I need the tach harness if I am using the data harness?

    Tune-up

I'd go with what Scott said. If you twisted the distributor while doing cap or rotor, the timing will be off. Or the plug wires got put on in the wrong order. Hopefully it'll be a quick and simple fix for you.

oil injection or premix the gas myself?

I removed the oil mixing system on my 2000 merc 200hp 2-stroke and mixed it 50:1 in the tank....didn't have any issues with that. The sell kits made for removing the oil systems on many of the older 2-strokes. Why do you want to remove it? Is it not working correctly?

Need to ID this motor so I can order a set of points for it

You'll need to post a picture, give us a brand or model, or serial number. Can't do much with what you gave us. If you are trying to post a picture, you need to make a few more posts before it will allow you to do so.

    6hp tohatsu won’t turn on

I will say that my father in law has a tohatso 6hp motor and it wouldn't start every year after the winter. As mentioned above, the carb has a few really small holes, namely the low idle jet. In order to get it cleaned and running I actually had to take a really thin piece of wire and poke it...

    does anyone know?

instead of turning it, can you flip the little piece that is sticking out to the left in the picture up? Or, perhaps there are threads on the inside of that piece where another plug would screw in? Definitely appears to be a drain from winterizing the engine.
