Well my floor had old treated plywood under the top portion. The guys on here told me to remove ant loose bits and neutralize it with baking soda. There’s J.B. Weld filling in the pitted cross members. My neighbor had some material that come out of his house during a remodel so I got it to go...

    Pitting/corrosion on jon boat bottom

Do I make a paste and how long does it need to sit before washing it off?

    Pitting/corrosion on jon boat bottom

I want to thank everyone for there help. I really appreciate it. This is an awesome forum. When I first got the boat for a project I would not have been able to repair and service everything on the motor from carburetors to prop without all the help. Now I’m running wot thanks to the forum.

    Pitting/corrosion on jon boat bottom

Got flooring material today. Going to give the boat a bath tomorrow. I have a good pressure washer. Do you think that would be sufficient?

    Pitting/corrosion on jon boat bottom

I appreciate the comments. Yea I mess around on the internet and read a bunch of different things that had me all confused. I want to keep a floor over the cross members to disperse weight. Here I go again but I’m afraid I might loosen the old rivets walking directly on the bottom. I drift fish...

    Pitting/corrosion on jon boat bottom

Thanks everyone for the reply’s. Yall can tell me if I screwed up the first time I pulled the floor. I was told as far as the pitting to hit it with a brush a little and fill in with marine J.B. Weld. Then I put weather striping on the cross members for a barrier. I just finished taking it all...

    Pitting/corrosion on jon boat bottom

Let me ask you something please. The front of the boat has some old metal signs ( don’t know if they are tin or aluminum) that are supporting that part of the floor. The signs have no corrosion at all but the boat has corrosion that looks similar to this and pitting on the cross members. When I...

    Pitting/corrosion on jon boat bottom

Previous owner may have had wood in there at one time. I was thinking a battery. I got the boat cheap and went to work on it a year ago. Finally got the motor running and now I’m working on this. It was neglected maintenance wise and there’s no telling what’s been patched and with what. I use it...

    Pitting/corrosion on jon boat bottom

It’s probably not treated then because this stuff is on there good. I have some untreated to replace the signs with and thinking about putting several coats of urethane. The plywood will be under the metal sheet covered with a non slip material. I’m not sure what the material is called but it’s...

    Pitting/corrosion on jon boat bottom

The one piece it has doesn’t look treated but it is incased in a thick coat of either fiberglass resin or epoxy. Still in good shape and sup heavy to handle because of the coating. If it is treated would the coating be a barrier? The bottom doesn’t look as bad under the plywood either. It’s wear...

    Catfish

I’m planning on hitting it with self etching primer then paint once I can get it cleaned up. Looks pretty bad. I’ll post a picture Monday when I remove the floor. The floor isn’t sealed around the edges so I found leafs , dirt , and even rocks clogging up the channels where it drains under the...

    Pitting/corrosion on jon boat bottom

There’s one sheet of plywood that starts at the seats in the stern. It’s coated with what looks like a thick clear resin. Doesn’t look treated other than that. Then where the plywood stops there’s a couple of old metal signs. Then there’s painted sheet metal on top of all that with a nice none...

    Pitting/corrosion on jon boat bottom

Thanks I didn’t think of that. Motor is a pull start. But they had lights on the boat. Thanks that’ll be part of the cleaning when I remove the floor. I’d like to paint it. My neighbor used self etching primer on his and didn’t paint over it. Is the self etching necessary?

    Pitting/corrosion on jon boat bottom

Here’s pictures of the bottom at the stern. Which is what a lot of it looks like under the floor.I haven’t removed the floor yet. The pitting on the cross members is anywhere from shallow to small holes. No pitting on the actual bottom. Just this discoloration that looks like corrosion to me. I...

    Pitting/corrosion on jon boat bottom

Hello everyone. I have a 1983 Monark 16/52. There’s some pitting in the cross members under the floor and other discoloration in spots on the bottom. I don’t know if it’s ever been in saltwater. I’m keeping it in freshwater only. Im about the remove the floor again this week and want to...

    Catfish

Nice work on the transom. I’ve made three trips to Somerville and haven’t brought a thing home. Not the lakes fault. First trip I got a late start and being by myself I only had time to float the jugs in one area of some flats. I caught little channel cat left and right on my rods while...

    Catfish

Hey 87Starcraft how is the boat coming along? I got a couple more jug lines to make and I’ll be on Fayette county lake Monday hunting some catfish. Bass fishing while the jugs are soaking. We drift fished Lake Bastrop one more time a couple weeks ago and still no good. Hopefully I’ll be posting...

Should I consider a jack plate?

Boating perfection or lack there off. Lol I was just curious if the motor being set back farther would do anything more than wanting to raise the motor. I’m getting all I'm going to get as far as it being high enough. Im off by a pitch on the new prop. It’ll turn 6 k if I let it and run 35 mph...

Woke up this morning with a tree on the boat

I was given that handle over 20 years ago by my fishing buddies. And I earned it. I worked at a boat shop for a while. If they wanted to know if there was anything wrong with a used boat that came in they’d give it to me for a few days. I’d find it out especially if it leaked. Two almost sank...
