Using regular steel bolts on outdrive

I don't believe they are 316L. This boat is probably never going to see salt though.

Using regular steel bolts on outdrive

I ended up getting the 316 stainless from bolt depot. They're quite a bit cheaper that way than buying oem.

Using regular steel bolts on outdrive

So im converting this old gimbal to the square/spline upper swivel shaft and i need the 2 bolts that pinch the square on the shaft at the top of the ring. The used gimbal ring did not come with hardware. This is an aluminum V hull running fresh water only that lives on the trailer in my yard.

Using regular steel bolts on outdrive

Is it acceptable to use ordinary zinc plated bolts on a gimbal assembly? I can't find stainless bolts in the correct size locally.

1974 Mercruiser 140hp transom assembly replacement options

Doesn't sound too awful to make it work. I have all the new bellows that were intended for my other drive. Thankfully the part numbers appear to be the same. May as well delete my old hydraulic trim sender too while im at it. At this point im contemplating throwing a new transom together since...

1974 Mercruiser 140hp transom assembly replacement options

Yes i made an offer and they took it. The gimbal housing on my boat right now has the same 3 passage 5 bolt pattern as this one but only the top 3 are used for the oval shaped exhaust pipe. It's no issue to plug the extra holes if needed. I also got the matching inner plate from ebay for a good...

1974 Mercruiser 140hp transom assembly replacement options

From your experience does the one in that ebay ad look like a 4 cylinder model? I compared part numbers for inline vs v8 online and it appears the v8 has 3 ribs on each side of the gimbal bearing boss while the 4/6 cylinder has only 2.

1974 Mercruiser 140hp transom assembly replacement options

That is unfortunate. Does anyone know if i can modify a V engine gimbal housing for use with inline units? I have a tig welder so welding it is no big deal.

1974 Mercruiser 140hp transom assembly replacement options

Would something like this be a direct swap? https://www.ebay.com/itm/313788191472?hash=item490f3bd2f0:g:SwQAAOSwhyxhs6Bc

1974 Mercruiser 140hp transom assembly replacement options

To clarify the situation a bit, I already have the engine out and rebuilt on a stand. I want to use the original engine and the new exhaust parts that i already paid for. I see that i can still get parts for the mc-1 drives with gimbal trim sensors. Can i just swap the whole gimbal assembly from...

1974 Mercruiser 140hp transom assembly replacement options

Does anyone know what transom assembly, if any, will be a direct swap for a 1974 140hp? The one that's on there now is an early style with the trim limit switch at the top and non threaded pins for the bellhousing. I can find a direct replacement for the gimbal housing on ebay but the gimbal...

Will the camshaft from a 120hp mercruiser function in a 140hp block?

Nevermind i found the right camshaft. In case anyone else has this question melling posts the cam specs of each one. The 120 cam is similar but has less lift and slightly different timing and a smaller lobe separation angle.

Will the camshaft from a 120hp mercruiser function in a 140hp block?

Hello again, in my continuing rebuild saga ive run into a problem with finding a new camshaft. The engine thats being built is a 140hp unit but for some reason all new camshaft stock has been sold and nobody knows when there will be more. I can find a cam for a 120hp pretty easily and they look...

    140hp 3.0L main bearing question

Ok guys this is what im dealing with. The 2 oil holes on the left side dont line up with anything. The only oil flow is through the slot cut into the bearing backing plate.

    140hp 3.0L main bearing question

I found these bearings in the clevite catalog under the chevy 153 cubic inch engine. The machine shop did not supply them. I'll post a picture of the bearings later.

    140hp 3.0L main bearing question

Hey guys ive got my 3.0 all back from the machine shop ready to put together. I went to install the main bearings and the oil holes dont line up in the top shell. Instead there is a groove that partially covers the oil hole. Is this by design? The bearings are clevite ms1733p which i believe is...

Parts interchange between chevy smallblock family and mercruiser 140 3.0 liter

good info guys I did a little checking and it doesn't look like 230 I6 parts are gonna work either. Anyone ever reuse rod bolts on these? paying $80 for a factory set from mercury isn't ideal.

Parts interchange between chevy smallblock family and mercruiser 140 3.0 liter

Im sorry if my question was confusing. I am actually rebuilding a 3.0 shortblock to go back in place of the original 3.0. A 5.7 swap is beyond the scope of this project. I'm mostly interested in knowing if things like piston rings, lifters, rod bolts, etc will swap between a smallblock and the...

Parts interchange between chevy smallblock family and mercruiser 140 3.0 liter

Does anyone have an idea what parts can be used from a smallblock engine in a mercruiser 140? I'm getting ready to rebuild my shortblock and would like to save money since sbc parts are usually the cheapest of any engine. The block is going to the machine shop to be crack checked this week and...
