    Clanking/rattling sound after prop change

Update here. Finally got to the boat today. I switched to my 3 blade aluminum prop, using the same new rubber hub I had installed the 4-blade with. Went out to the lake, full tank and 3 people in the boat....no rattling or clanking whatsoever past 4000 rpms. There was only one time when I seem...

    Clanking/rattling sound after prop change

I installed them when I replaced the head gasket. So they literally have approx 8 hours of use.

    Clanking/rattling sound after prop change

The manual says 20 hrs. Wonder if I should retorq the head to specs as a precaution? It has about 8 hrs of use until now.

    Clanking/rattling sound after prop change

As much I would like that to be the problem, I pretty much sure the noise is from the engine, almost certain from starboard side. It's a sharp metallic sound. Like a rod or valve. The hub is quicksilver, brand new. I have never had issues with those. I'll switch the hub to my 3 blade aluminum...

    Clanking/rattling sound after prop change

Thanks. To clarify. I went from SS 3 blade to Aluminum 4 blade. But I agree with you. I think the 4blade is lugging the engine. Never thought it could have such a big impact.

    Clanking/rattling sound after prop change

Thanks. It is there. I've replaced at least 10 propellers in the last few years. Thrust washer > hub > prop > adapter> tab washer > nut. Nut is tightened to the specs and tabs bent. The prop runs smoothly.

    Clanking/rattling sound after prop change

Thanks. Is it normal for that to happen after a prop change? Will take pictures next time I'm close to the storage. Timing has been unchanged since I bought the engine a few years ago. It has always performed well...at least, as you said, I never heard that sound before. I doubt it, the noise...

    Clanking/rattling sound after prop change

Hi Folks, I searched the forum briefly but couldn't find anything similar. 17' Cadorette (Thundecraft) BR Nuova 170 . 1998 Mercruiser 3.0 Alpha one Gen I (Replaced head gasket last year - ~8 hours of use) A few days ago, I switched props from a 3-blade SS 14.25 x 19P to a 4-blade Aluminum...

Very thick heavy weeds - Is that the problem ? or what ?

I know it's an old thread but this likely happened to me today. I Went boating to the Toronto island approx 15 miles from the ramp I launched. Navigated the channels within the island. Parked the boat for about an hour. When I hit the throttle after leaving the island, the boat wouldn't come up...

Proper way to wire a kill switch on Thunderbolt IV

Had the chance to measure the current drawn by the ignition system. It's about 3.7 amps ( ignition only without instruments) Installed the seadog switch (which is actually rated 10amp); it works like a charm.

Temp switch went off - overheating engine?

Oh no. The Sierra that failed and I replaced with the Merc, had been in the engine for 2 or 3 years.

Temp switch went off - overheating engine?

To wrap this up. I replaced the Sierra temp switch with Merc OEM and the issue is gone. Tip: the Merc original Temp Switch retails for about 80 or more. Instead, get the entire Audio Warning Kit from eBay for 50 bucks or so. It includes not only OEM temperature and oil switches but the warning...

Audio Warning Kit's Time Delay Relay Repair

Couldn't find the exact answer to my question so here is a short write-up about repairing the Audio Warning Kit. There are mixed opinions online about the time delay on the buzzer. Many like it sounds as soon as you turn the key, others prefer it doesn't go off right away. The latter option has...

Audio Warning system disable with Key on engine off for Radio?

I guess it depends on the type of ignition switch your boat has. My boat has a four-position ignition switch: Battery, Starter, Ignition, and Accessories. If I turn the key to the left, it enables the accessories only; this is where your radio has to be wired to. When the engine is running, the...

Temp switch went off - overheating engine?

Spent some time troubleshooting the boat's alarm issue. Now I'm pretty confident it's the temp switch. To my surprise ( as I hoped it would), the alarm didn't go off when I turned the ignition. So I took the boat to the lake armed with a brand new IR thermometer. On the water, in neutral, I let...
