Stripped Thread on One of Water Pump Mounting Holes - Helicoil?

So, my impeller replacement job hit a couple of stumbling blocks. Latest, stripped thread on one of the pump mounting holes in the LU. I'm thinking Helicoil or equivalent to restore threads. Anybody done this? I'm thinking the SS Helicoil is the way to go. Yes/no? Or will that create a...

What Kind of Steel for My Water Pump Bolts?

Yes, they are metric. My local hardware store has metric fittings in SS. See attached photo. Brown(ish) component is water pump housing. Black component is extension used on long shaft models. You can see bolt protruding from base of pump housing. When the gasket and base are in place...

What Kind of Steel for My Water Pump Bolts?

Have '82 30 HP Mariner, Japanese made. Water pump housing has an extension to accommodate the long-shaft configuration. Rebuilding the water pump and noted, on re-assembly, that the bolts that hold down the pump housing only have 1/8" purchase on the threads. Looks like the bolts that were on...

    New Impeller Plate Different?

I've got an '82 30HP Mariner. Purchased a water pump kit from iboats (3'd party, OEM listed as NLA on Crowley site). See attached. Water intake in new impeller plate is smaller that in old plate. Seems like it would reduce cooling flow. Significant? Or no? Going to install it and see how...

Interesting Find in My Water Pump Housing

30 HP Mariner, 1982. Cooling flow problems so pulled LU and found impeller shot. The plate and cartridge insert showing some scuffing so I decided to get the complete kit while I still can. Pulled the insert out of the water pump housing and saw a little knurl of "stuff" near the water outlet...

Five for Five on Cooling Problems

I often see posts on OB cooling problems. I'm no expert, but, I can recall five instances of my motor overheating/lack of cooling water flow. Every time the problem has come back to the impeller. Latest instance - went out to fire up my motor and no flow through tell-tale. Pulled the LU and...

Anybody Ever Set Tile in 5200 or Similar?

Moving along, although slowly. Finished the top, including sealing w/epoxy. Also applied epoxy (West 105) to a small test piece. Put a thin bead of 5200 Fast Set on a scrap of tile, pressed it on to test piece, and let It sit over night. See photos below. Took pretty good leverage with tool...

    Neat Sanding Block at HF

About $6. Advertised to take 6" stick-on sanding disks (which HF sells). Works better with hook-n-loop disks (which HF does not sell, but Lowes does). Sponge-like material, so adapts to irregular surfaces. Sides have about 1/2" radius for sanding fillets, etc.

Anybody Ever Set Tile in 5200 or Similar?

Making a small, rolling, outdoor cabinet. Top maybe 2'X2' and I want to tile it. Convention (from what I've read) is plywood top, thin set, screw down cement board, apply membrane then thin set and tile and finish w/grout. I'm thinking of drawing on techniques/materials I've used with my...

Need Help Understanding Navigation Light Requirements

Now getting to the time where I'm actually spending more time using my boat than working on it. Since I might be out after dark, as shorter days approach, I'm looking at installing navigation lights. My understanding is that for my boat, 15'-6" aluminum skiff w/outboard, I need one of those...

    Almost a Tragedy

On a routine "tour" of the Shelter Island Launch Ramp yesterday I noticed a 15'6" Bayrunner alongside a large RIB tied to one of the piers. Since I have the same boat I strolled over to take a closer look - get ideas for improvements/share experiences/etc. As I got closer I noticed the...

    What's Wrong With My Tire?

Saw this little beauty at the Shelter Island Launch Ramp today. Doesn't show in the picture, but, looks like it has been like this for a long time. Is this why some of you guys have dual axle trailers?

Photo Won't Upload - What's the File Size Limit?

Tried to upload a single photo, jpeg, 2.21 mb size. Got some weird message. Old Board used to tell me it was too big and show the size limits for various file formats. So, what's the current size limit for a jpeg? And, if I have a bigger file, how can I upload it (without a phd in CS)?

    Aluminum Hull Bunk Covering

I've got an aluminum hull that has, for the past 3-4 years, been sitting on fir bunks that have been treated with CPES and painted, then covered with the bunk carpet that West sells (supposedly doesn't retain much moisture). Climate here (San Diego) is pretty dry overall. I noticed some...

Correct Way to Use Crimp Tool?

If a picture is worth 1000 words then maybe a blurred picture is worth 500 or so words. Attached are photos of my tool. The way it's set up, both sets of "jaws" are (apparently) designed to work together.

Correct Way to Use Crimp Tool?

Haven't had a crimp connection fail yet, but, still not sure of correct way to use tool. My tool is one of those ratcheting types with two "jaws" for each wire size. The "jaws" on the side where the color coding dots are located look like they are designed to squeeze a round or semi-round...

    Controller Wiring PM?

Attached is the rat's nest that makes the connections from my controller to the harness that goes to the motor. Been in place since 1982 with no problems. However, if there were a problem it would be a PITA to diagnose, get at and repair. The wiring is inside the console but the console is...

    Trailer Light Placement Question

Haven't worried about this much since I've never trailed my boat when lights have been needed. Now that I have some more time I expect to be trailing my boat when it will be necessary to use the lights. So, I want to comply with both the California DMV and the Federal DOT requirements...
