    Popular Mechanics 1962 PM38 Build [SPLASHED 2017]

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I have done some more painting so it now has yellow spray rails and those arrow head type things on the gunwales in the back. Can't decide if I want to do something on the deck on the bow yet. We'll see. I had planned to do a float test yesterday but then...

    Popular Mechanics 1962 PM38 Build [SPLASHED 2017]

Thank you all! Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks, huh? :whoo: Seriously though, y'all's advice helped me greatly so I really appreciate that! As the picture shows, I did put masking tape on both sides of it when I cut. I added the wider blue tape so the saw wouldn't scratch it and...

    Popular Mechanics 1962 PM38 Build [SPLASHED 2017]

Well, now I can say I have cut plexiglass for the first time. It was a bit scary at first but I ran the saw on a slower speed and had a very fine-toothed blade and just took my time. It went great! Drilling the new holes was even scarier I have to say. I was just waiting for it to split but I...

    Popular Mechanics 1962 PM38 Build [SPLASHED 2017]

Hmm, ok, I could try to grind off a bit in the middle. The following pictures I think gives a better idea of what it looks like. In this picture it is just sitting on top of the deck and you can see the gaps on each side better.

    Popular Mechanics 1962 PM38 Build [SPLASHED 2017]

Thanks for all the kind words. They are greatly appreciated! I've made a lot of progress in the past few days. I got the motor control all ready, with the electrical harness and the throttle/gear wires through the seat backs and organized running back to the transom. I think I may have gotten...

    Popular Mechanics 1962 PM38 Build [SPLASHED 2017]

Have two coats of the deck paint in place and also on the inside. Got both seats painted as well. Just waiting for the paint to dry completely before assembling things and then start adding the hardware.

    Popular Mechanics 1962 PM38 Build [SPLASHED 2017]

Time for a minor update. I have spent some time working on the rear seat and also the support between the seats. I'll need to take the plywood off the support and do some more sanding to get it a bit smoother. The plywood doesn't lay as smooth as I'd like. But it's a start. I also...

    Popular Mechanics 1962 PM38 Build [SPLASHED 2017]

This weekend I had some time to work on the transom. For the most part it came out ok after sanding a bit. But a few spots needed some extra filler and I also had to fill in some epoxy on the tabs where I had to grind a couple of small bubbles. Some more sanding and then I should be able to...

    Popular Mechanics 1962 PM38 Build [SPLASHED 2017]

I took some measurements on the boat and adjusted the bunks, mid support and bow support. Then a neighbour came over and gave me a hand moving her over to the trailer. I had to make a couple of adjustments to the bunks but we didn't have to take the boat off. She sits pretty nicely on there now.

    Popular Mechanics 1962 PM38 Build [SPLASHED 2017]

Yes, I agree, that would be very nice. Unfortunately I don't have the tools or the know-how to do something like that, so I'll settle for some plywood. If I can get it the way I want it, I think it will still look ok. I did pull the plug on a trailer today. So now I just need some extra...

    Popular Mechanics 1962 PM38 Build [SPLASHED 2017]

Well, I'm just glad I shouldn't have to flip her over again. :) I did have my one and only moving blanket on the floor and I'm sure it helped a bit. In hindsight I should have had one more person there to help. I think that would have been enough. Anyways, moving on... I've been doing a bit of...

    Popular Mechanics 1962 PM38 Build [SPLASHED 2017]

So I flipped her this weekend. In hindsight, I shouldn't have done it by myself. I got one of those proverbial bugs and just decided to go for it. The block and tackle system worked well. I was able to lift the back end well clear of the saw horse. And I was also able to lift the bow by myself...

    Popular Mechanics 1962 PM38 Build [SPLASHED 2017]

So I have this crazy idea for how to flip the boat over, all by myself. I am actually able to lift the aft section off the saw horse by myself using two pulleys as the block and one as the tackle. Now I just need to find a beam over the bow and duplicate it there. Then I should be...

    Popular Mechanics 1962 PM38 Build [SPLASHED 2017]

No Title Ok, ok, I'll add some. I'll probably fill in the bow section with a thin layer just so I can sand it as smooth as the rest. The light green aft section is sanded but I had to fill in a few areas so I'll need to sand some more. I also filled in the areas in front of it to...

    Popular Mechanics 1962 PM38 Build [SPLASHED 2017]

Hi All, This past summer the wife and I decided that a little boat would be fun to tool around the lake we have nearby. While shopping around for a small used boat I came across some information about the PM38 published in Popular Mechanics back in August of 1962. Both of us liked the design so...

    Hull inspection experience?

Hi All, I am working on building a small 13' wooden runabout and recently looked at the process for registering it here in Georgia. It isn't anywhere near ready yet but I'm just trying to think ahead. I saw that an inspection will be needed and a HIN (hull identification number) will be...
