Replacing my outdrive but can't determine the right one!

already have a used 888 :) Looking for the correct ratio. Now I can't find where I found the 1.97 info but glad I asked here. Is the 1.50 one and half engine rotations to one prop? or the other way? I am considering the SEI but I had one implode on my other boat while in the middle of the...

Replacing my outdrive but can't determine the right one!

1976 Mercruiser with Ford 351W: Outdrive that was on the boat has 888 decals on it (888 (2 BBL.) FORD 302 V-8 1971-1977) but the '76 351 is a 233 (233 FORD 351 V-8 1975-1977). The serial number is 4228535 so it overlaps both with the 'and up' in the parts finders. The 888 is a 1.50 ratio but...

    196 351W Flywheel

Yep, did not know that there was a need to mark it. Was pretty frustrated at that point just trying to get the 6 nuts off. Did not have/could not find a 6 point box wrench to get in behind the coupler to get them off and my 12 point was chewing them up. New ones on the way!! Now need to...

Thanks for the replies/info. Must be very slightly off as the look symmetrical.

    196 351W Flywheel

So a bit off the original topic but I have read that the flywheel is a 28oz imbalanced type and I can see the extra weight on it but what I have not figured out is how to determine the right orientation when putting it back on. I did not know this before removal and did not mark it.

    196 351W Flywheel

Wow, that was easy. Left the flywheel outside over night and did the oven but I only did 450* (wife was not happy) Thanks! NAPA stocks the ring gear for $39.

    196 351W Flywheel

Chewed up teeth on the flywheel. Numbers cast and stamped into the back of it shows it to be a late 60s to mid 70s manual transmission 157 tooth. These are fairly common but if I search for a Mercruiser one for my year/motor I get NLA or $$$. C6ZE-6380-A C7ZE-E Is this flywheel right or did...

    351W Aft Motor Mounts

Motor is out and I have pressed out the old aft mounts (pretty easy). Whole can of worms now: Might as well replace other two mounts, ring gear has about 10-12 chewed up teeth, exhaust manifolds all plugged up with gunk, missing bolts-guess this is what you get with a 45yo motor that has been...

    351W Aft Motor Mounts

Ok, I started the process of removing the engine to get new mounts but I am confused. Starboard side the fiber washer did spin freely and it and the spring inside it came out easily. Once out there is no contact between the flywheel cover and the transom plate. For the port side (one in...

    351W Aft Motor Mounts

When I removed the outdrive it did not seem to be difficult to slide out but then I have only removed one other outdrive on another boat before.

    351W Aft Motor Mounts

I figured since the front mounts are fully extended to get some alignment. Gimball bearing is worn out too; probably from these mounts failing. I have an alignment tool but since it is cold as hell outside I have not rolled the boat out to check that (boat is up against the shop wall)

    351W Aft Motor Mounts

Are these shot? To me they look like they have collapsed or failed with that much bolt protruding out the top and how close the two parts are.

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Ignition System

Thanks for all the info! I spent yesterday tearing mine down & cleaning it up. I found that the front retaining plate inside was loose that allowed the armature to move back and forth. It was rubbing a bit on the brush plate so maybe I am good.

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Ignition System

I looked at the Sierra # 18-5903...that hose clamp around looks pretty redneck!

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Ignition System

Learned that the Bendix drive has some sort of anti kickback keeping it engaged until the motor starts, which then kicks it back at a 'certain RPM'. So when I bench tested it the drive moved forward and stayed there since there was nothing to kick it back. Seems like this is why they chew up...

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Ignition System

I am thinking I will have to pull the engine to replace the aft motor mount anyway... I did find the drive on eBay (I Hope)

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Ignition System

Thanks. I could probably clean it all up myself but no luck so far finding the 'drive'...which I think has failed since it won't retract.

    Identifying 1976 Engine-is it a 302 or a 351?

Mine is green and white. I bought it in Montana but then found out it spent most of its life on Priest Lake, where I have it now.
